Weird engine trouble; should I worry? V70-XC70 1998

So yesterday I was driving home jam-packed car w/ family from vacation, mostly at interstate speeds in 85 or so degree weather. Suddenly, about 5 miles from home, the car seemed to shudder and the "check engine" light came on. I made it home, unloaded the car, and after an hour or so took the car for a drive to get a handle on the problem. The warning light was still on and the car seemed to be "missing" or sputtering when I stepped on the gas, and it seemed to have a bit less power. This evening, I was set to drop it off at my mechanic so he could check it out bright and early. However, when I started it up and drove, nothing was wrong and the check engine light did not come on. I drove it a bit and it seemed fine, strong, faultless.

So the question is, I guess, what happened, and should I worry, or should I just wait it out and figure the problem went away on its own?

'98 v70 AWD w/ 138 k miles.

Thanks!

Without knowing what the code was, even your mechanic will have a hard time.

If you were in hilly country, with a very long up hill, it could be the tranny getting too hot. Check the ATF level and color.

The next time that happens, shift to 3rd. Increased rpms will help cool the ATF.
