Buzzing noise S40-V40 1998

1998 v40 tse 2.0 has loud buzzing noise under bonnet drivers side when ignition on. Pitch of buzz sound changes when key turned from I to II and continues when engine starts. I'd be grateful for any suggestions of what it is, is it serious, can I fix it.
Thanks.

Sounds like the idle air control motor from your description. Best thing to do is lift the bonnet and trace down the noise. If it comes from an aluminum cylinder next to the throttle body, that is the IAC. It is normally supported in its bracket with a rubber cushion, this tends to get hard with age and allows the vibration to be transfered to the metal and make more noise.
