Simplified Timing Belt Question S60

05 Volvo s60 w/ VVT.

My question is this...do I need to lock the cams? I have read that it can be done without locking the cams if you are careful.

Also I have called AutoZone, NAPA, O'Reily, and Advance and none of them seem to know what I am talking about when I say a cam locking tool. Do they just not carry them or is it called something else.

If they do have them, is there one that is better on the Volvo than another.

Please help...trying to get to this tbelt issue tomorrow!!

No, you do not NEED the tool, but it sure makes the work easier. I suggest using whiteout or some other marker for the cam sprockets and the crank. Just so you don't need to second guess when you put the belt back on. You might want to count the teeth between the cams...

Without the cam holder, you will encounter some difficulty (not insurmountable) when you try to get the belt tight between the two cams. Usually just 2 tries.

Don't worry, the cams will not do a 180 on you when you get the belt off!

After taking the bottom protective plate from the crank pulley, note that there is very little room to remove the belt. When you tire of trying to get it off, get the box cutter and cut the belt. The new one will slide on quite nicely - so they tell me :>)

      Simplified Timing Belt Question S60

      Klaus,

Thanks for all your help. The timing belt change went well.

We did hit a snag or twoin the process.

We did not have or use a cam locking tool. We marked the timing positions with white out. The mark on the crank is tough to see...by far the hardest. We took thin wire and ran through the screw holes in the cams and twisted the wire like a bred ty. It held the cams in place just fine.

We did not have the tool for releasing the serpentine belt either. We had to get creative on this one. We used a long pry bar to lift the tensioner to get the belt off and put it back on. Would have been easier with tool for sure.

We took your advice and did not remove the pulley. We just took the four screws out of the pulley and cut the belt off with box cutters.

We replaced the tensioner, belt, and water pump. Nothing to hard there.

I was throwing a MAP sensor code prior to the change, but noticed that the check engine light came on upon start up. Is it possible that it could be dealing with the timing??

I ran the car about 10 miles to suck the coolant into the pump and it ran great...maybe better than before. Assuming the check engine light is dealing with the timing, what do I need to do?? I really don't want to take everything back apart with it running so well. What are my options???

Until you get the code read, recheck the timing marks. Just the cam marks to simplify things, they must be 'spot on' in the newer engines. Off by one tooth will produce a P0014.

I caught one person who had a P0014 due to 5 loose spark plugs!

        you done good.

          Simplified Timing Belt Question S60

Thanks. Got up this morning and drove the Volvo to church and light was off. I'm thinking it may have been on due to low coolant fluids. I ran the car for about 10 minutes last night to get the antifreeze moving and it put up the red triangle telling me to stop safely and add coolant. I got home added the coolant and woke up this morning with no light.

We triple checked the markings. We took a sharpie and counted and marked the teeth on the belt between the cams...did the same when putting the new belt on.

          Again thanks for your help!!
