Occaisional white smoke from tailpipe - hoping it's the CSV not a blown headgasket S70 1998

One of my Volvo's - the S70 1998 20valve. Has about 135K miles on it. It recently has started to intermittently blow some white smoke from the tailpipe. Actually not too sure if the smoke is white or blue - the windows are very tinted and they were up when I saw the smoke. A friend showed me the CSV valve (called something else by Volvo?) and said it could possibly be that valve being clogged and dumping some oil into the engine. This could be an easy fix he said - mainly some time on our part replacing the valve. The other option was much more dire - a blown or soon to be blown headgasket. Aargghh!

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks so much!

I am not familiar with a CSV. If you suspect a head gasket problem, get a compression test on a warm engine.

If the smoke is blueish, then it is oil burning in the cylinders and probably the PCV is clogged, if you do not have a turbo. Cleaning the PCV is easily done.

Klaus, does the '98 S70 still have the flame trap setup?
I remember how my old '95 850 would always require that to be
either cleaned or replaced on a regular basis.

Turbos do not have a PCV, they have a PTC nipple. Search on PCT.

All 5 cylinders have an oil separator located under the intake manifold runners. The hoses get old and cracked with age.
