"transmission service required' S60 2003

Car has 170K miles. About 2000 miles ago, started down shifting hard into first and upshifting hard out of first into second. Changed the fluid and it started shifting much smoother. Still had a hard shift everyonce in a while, but greatly improved.

Today, wife called said it felt like it was slipping and had the "transission service required" message.

Any comments on diagnosis? I have located a used transmission for $600 with 150K miles and 30 day warranty.

My plan is to just swap it, but if there might be an easeir fix, I am game to try.

Thank for your input!!!

Keith

You should be able to pull/clear the codes with a generic scanner. I suspect a solenoid has malfunctioned. The error put your car in limp home mode, which is 3rd gear only, and there is really no slipping.

Of course, the repeated hard shifts has probably cause internal damage. If you get a new tranny, be prepared to have the software upgraded at the dealer.

You also might want to get the codes read at the dealer, it is supposed to be a free service. And check the current software level while you are there. Let them know you found a donor tranny.

When I changed the fluid, I used tehe Toyota T-IV fluid. My research found it to be compatible with the 3309. Is the T-IV ok or should I put in Mobile 3309 and try it. Drove the car last night for about 5 miles and shifted perfect. Problem seems to appear after some in town stop and go driving.

Thanks,

Toyota t-iv = 3309. I asume your software updates are OK. When the message comes up again, try to get the code read for free somewhere - preferably a dealer.

If you will DIY the tranny swap, then $300 is a good price. Paying someone else to installe it is not cheap.
