Noisy Brakes S80 2000

Have anyone here had any problems with their brakes making squeeling noise while deaccelerating slowly (like when approaching a stop sign or stop light leisurely)? I have a 2000 T6 with about 17000 miles on it that just started doing this a few months ago.

It drives my wife nuts who says she feels embarrased by the noise, like she is driving an old clunker.

The dealer says it is brake dust. I wondered *why* it is just showing up now then (that sounded like BS to me because there is no more dust now then when I bought the car over a year ago).

Anyway, any thoughts / similar experiences / fixes (?) would be appreciated.

John

Re: Noisy Brakes S80 2000

I have the identical problem and feeling. It's annoying and embarassing to have squeaky brakes when coming to a stop.

I brought it up with my dealership and they said it just happens. He said that maybe using a brilo pad to lightly rub the disk brakes (to remove deposits of brake pad stuff) would work. They can also put some sort of lubricant (it doesn't go on the actual disk-brak pad junction) behind the brake pad that can help with the squeaking.

Unfortunately, their techs didn't notice the problem and so did nothing, and I needed my car back. So maybe some other time it will get fixed. Ask your dealership about it.

Re: Noisy Brakes S80 2000

OK... final (?) part of the story (at least for now). When I pushed harder on the dealership about this issue, they said, "gee - it turns out you don't really have 35-40% left on your front brake pads, but only 20%. We now recommend you replace them." My rear pads are 75% remaining (pretty amazing for a Volvo!).

Anway, I did replace the front pads, and for now, the problem has disappeared (at least temporarily). I guess since my front pads lasted nearly 18K miles, I cannot complain about that, but it was truly annoying when my dealer acted like 'hey - squeeky brakes are normal on Volvos - just live with it'.

Re: Noisy Brakes S80 2000

I'm surprised by the people posting about brake pads wearing "early" on their S80's. I really don't understand this. I changed my pads at about 28,000 miles - they never sqeeked and the new ones don't either. I have somewhat of a heavy foot, but in stop and go traffic (like "rush" hour on an "expressway"), rather than ride the brakes, I use manual shifting so that the engine slows the car.

As an observation, it seems that a lot of the posters that have problems with their Volvo dealers are in the States and I just wanted to say that I am very happy with my dealer (McMillan and Saunders in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada). The head mechanic there really knows his stuff when it comes to the S80.

Happy motoring!
