oil consumption 850 1995

Well, I have finally fixed all of the oil leaks on this car over the last 100k miles. It's nice to have a clean engine compartment for a change, but now I still have to figure why the following is happening.

After fixing/replacing the PCV system completely in the vehicle with all new stuff I found that was my major oil leak. The local service shop put a hose clamp on so tight that it ripped right through a hose. (not good)...

But anyways,

After fixing this I did an oil change, but before I did that I did an engine flush to clean out the junk that may have been in it. Then drained it all out, put new oil and new filter on. For the first time in years the car actually registered the oil correctly on the dip stick. And after checking it daily for a week everything seem to be fine. So then, I did not check it every day but every couple of days, now about 2000 miles later I noticed that I was about a quart low, but absolutely no leaking anywhere. I even watched the exhaust and I had absolutely no smoking or color coming out of the tail pipe.

Does anyone have any clue on why I'm still eating oil? What do I need to check?

It is a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan with 374K miles on it.

Hi, as my 850-94 got closer to 300kkm it started to consume some more oil.
started to think about using thicker oil but wasn't too worried about it.

If you're only burning a quart every 2000 miles with 374k on it I wouldn't worry about it. Hope my 850 does as well. My former VW with 381k burned a little more and still ran well.

I believe the "old" rule of thumb is a motor doesn't need a rebuild until it's using a quart every 500 miles.

Agreed. That is not excessive consumption with that kind of mileage.

Well, the way I see it at this point.

I'm going to watch it very carefully, considering I use full synthetic lubricants and after going 100k miles leaking like crazy I just consumed/wasted about 120 quarts of oil. I'm not into wasting more money now. I will consider redoing the motor at some point, but will need to prepare for it.

oil consumption- gunked rings 850 1995

I inherited a Toyota Corolla that was burning oil like mad, maybe a quart in 150 miles. The car was in good shape other than clutch. While the car was apart for the clutch replacement, I pulled the plugs and squirted a healthy dose of
Marvel Mystery oil into each cylinder and soaked the rings for two days.
After that I took the car on a round trip Boston-Dayton,Ohio and it burned only
1/2 quart. (I forget the exact mileage)

Before starting the engine get the plugs and wires out of the way and put plenty of newspapers and spin the engine with the starter until most of that stuff is flung out.... Don't want to aggravate the O2 sensors or cat converter.

If you have a good baseline for oil consumption, I'd like to know if a Mystery Oil soak helped you out. Maybe an overnight soak would give you some results?
Don't confuse Mystery oil with WD40 or something else.

          Good luck, Bill

Sounds like you are all good and happy. Just check the oil level when you tank up. With your mileage, I would suspect the valve guides are leaking oil and it is being burned in the exhaust. No big deal. You might notice some smoke after very long periods of idling or when you have lifted off the gas pedal going down a long hill. Replacing valve guides is quite expensive, there are 20 of them and the head must be exposed.
