Replacing the weather stripping on the rear door V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I have a white 1999 XC with a 130,000 miles. The original black plactic weather stripping that runs the length of the rear window in the rear door (hatch) is "bubbling up" due to rust inside the weather stripping itself.

Is this an easy fix in that you pull off the old weather stripping and just press into place (just underneath the rear window) the new weather stripping? Or should I spend the additional money and bring the car to an autobody shop and have it install the new weather stripping? The weather strip retails for about $41 from my local Volvo dealer.

Thank you in advance to all who reply.

Hugh

That is just window dressing. Take the rusty thing off immediately before the paint bubbles up and you wind up needing to repaint the hatch. Wax it well with paste wax.

The new black strip slides on. I suggest spraying the groove with silicone and sliding it on from the driver's side. Be very careful not to bend it or it will be toast.

      Klaus,

Do you just pull the old weather strip out from the side of the door? If yes, as you suggested, after removing the old strip, you just slide in the new one? I know you mentioned applying a silicone spray to ease the installation. I just want to make sure I understand the process of removal and installation correctly. You are right, these strips are fragile.

      Thanks!

      Hugh

On my 1998 V70, I just pulled the strip down from the glass. Then I cleaned the glass, waxed the top of the tailgate next to the glass - it was dirty and needed a good paste wax anyway.

The parts people at Volvo told me to slide it on from ones side, you choose. That was quite difficult because you don't want to bend the metal. I suggest using a cloth to cover the end you are pushing on. Without silicone spray, I don't think I could have pushed it the last inch or so.

After it is on the glass, push it up to make sure it is in place.

          Klaus,

I'll tackle this job when I get the new strip. I was intimidated by how "tight" the old strip seemed to be on the car. I was afraid I might damages the car by pulling out the old strip.
