changed water pump, now it leaks..... 850

I installed a new Volvo pump today, only to see fluid leaking out between the gasket, pump & block. Grrr. I did not put any gasket seal on it, having cleaned the surface really well. Torqued all the bolts in a diagonal pattern to 14.8 ft lbs, or 177 inch pounds. Checking each bolt three times. Put all of it back together only to see coolant and water seeping out. Started the engine and more came out, slowly, but enough to warrant tearing it apart again.

So the point of this post is... What kind of sealant should I use on the gasket? Provided it wasn't damaged in the first place. I figure I have another day and half to work on it before Monday rolls around. If I cannot succeed, then I'll let my local mechanic do it and pay out the you know what.

BTW, it is true, these are a pain to change! 200k miles on the odometer and going strong.

    Parts stores sell water pump sealant or RTV. You didn't mention where it was leaking. Some people put sealant on the bolts????

    BTW, nice torque wrench, but 15 lbs works for me. Just tighten all bolts hand tight first before going back with a torque.

      Thanks Klaus. I will take a look tomorrow if it still leaks. I pulled it apart again today and found a small piece of the old gasket still attached to the block. (Should have used a mirror before putting it back together the first time)
      Upon putting it all back together there is still a tiny amount seeping out from who knows where. It ends up in the back on the plastic bottom cover where the upper timing belt cover tab slides in place. I started the engine and let it warm up fully to flush the air out of the coolant system and checked for additional leaking. No worse, no less. I'm hoping that running it a few times before taking it out, it might just settle and be good.

      Otherwise I'll get the sealant and put a thin line on both sides of the gasket.

      (BTW, I have to use an inch lb wrench because my snap-on only goes down to 18 ft lbs.)

        How did you clean the sealing surfaces?

        Scraper, screwdriver, razorblade, sandpaper?

        If not ultra-careful, it is very easy to marr sealing surfaces.

        Just a thought.

          Hello Ken,

          I used both a razor blade and some scotch brite to clean the surface, making sure not to scar the aluminum surface. Letting it set overnight seamed to have cured the minor leak though. It is fine
          now and all back together. Should be good for another 200k miles.

            FWIW I was advised to put a smear of high temp silicone on the gasket when I'm putting a water pump back in place. It helps ensure a seal against the possibly uneven metal surfaces and also it will hold the gasket in place while you position the water pump.

            The bolts I bought came with sealant/locker already applied to the threads.
