Oil under the Top Cover 850 1996

Getting to know the new plaything... used '96/850 GLT at 83k...This is not the same car as my '87 240:

Removed the top cover over the spark plugs to find oil pooling in the depressions on top and behind the spark plug wells. Should I assume sloppy oil change practices on the part of the local grease idiots or worse? What to look for?

What do I do about a radio code that won't work? I replaced the battery, called the dealer, got a code, and all I get is "EEEE" on the display?

In my explorations and work this weekend...I found the oil drain plug nearly boogered into round (PIA to change the oil, found a plug at O'Reilly's) and the battery took almost a quart of water to restore level. It was near dead, so I replaced it. I never use "quickie lubes" for those reasons. Brakes needed to be replaced, so that's done. Spent the money for a new set of belts - timing and serpentine, flushed the transmission, and had the leaking transaxle seals replaced. Used only OEM parts from Don at Topping Volvo.

Re: Oil under the Top Cover 850 1996

96 GLT should be a turbo engine. If so, doesn't have a flame trap. Oil cap seals get brittle with age. Visit the dealer with a buck or two and replace it. EEEE on radio display indicates wrong code was entered. If the radio was replaced,(likely) most dealers don't update the Volvo database. To get the proper code you'll have to have the radio part #, serial #, and model. Push the two tabs on either side of the radio, they will pop out. pull on the tabs and the radio slodes out. Write down the part and serial numbers. Model is on front of radio, example, SC 816. Give this info to dealer and they can get the right code. If wrong code is entered 3 times, radio locks out, display reads "off" To unlock, the key must be in the accessory position, and radio turned on for 2 hours. Then the display will read "code" and you get 3 new tries. One thing you will want to check is the positive battery cable. They are known for bad crimp on the terminal end at battery. Using a digital volt meter, conect between battery terminal on back of alternator, and batt positive at the battery. Start the engine, turn on lights and blower, and read meter. It should read no more than about .1 volt. If its higher than that, you can repair by removing the battery, remove smaller wires vrom batt terminal, peel back or cut off the rubber sleeve that covers where the cable enters the terminal, heat the terminal with a propane torch and wick some solder down around the cable and into the terminal. A lot easier than replaceing the cable. Wrap with electrical tape and reassemble.

Re: Oil under the Top Cover V70-XC70 1998AWD

I've noted the same oil collection in my V70AWD. It seems like the oil cap always seeps. I fixed the problem by simply turning over the oil cap gasket. No more seepage, no more collecting under the cover!

I'll give that flipping of the gasket over a try because I found the same oil on my motor when I did plugs last week. I also assumed it was sloppy work prior, even though the car was cared for at Volvo HQ in Rockleigh, NJ.

I just changed my plugs last weekend and saw the same oil pooling under the cover. I think it's just overspill from filling the oil. The only other way I think oil could get there would be if the crankcase were under pressure and oil was being pushed past the oil cap gasket. Did you clean your flame trap? Don't know anything about radio codes.

Where is the flame trap on the 850? Is at the end of the hose that exits from under the cover? Will Haynes tell me? I know where it is on the 240, and thought that Volvo had done away with this menace to the engine.

Re: Oil under the Top Cover 850 1996

Haynes will tell you. It's on the backside of the intake hose between the airbox and the throttle body. The hose and housing locks in place and just needs a twist to remove. The flame trap (little more than a plastic screen) is in the housing and can be removed with a needle nose pliers or screwdriver. Clean the gunk from the housing and make sure the flame trap and hoses are clear. A new one costs a couple dollars. They did away with them on the turbos but they are in the NA models. I have also seen where ipd or volvoparts (or something) sells a replacement oil cap gasket.
