5th tire rotation schedule XC90

Just put on new tires on my 50K mile 2008 xc90. In the event I damage a tire, I'd like to avoid having to by a new set of 2 or 4, so I purchased a 5th tire that I plan to rotate into the mix at intervals that insure even wear. Has anyone done this before and what is the best procedure or rotation schedule?
thanks

Unless you can use the extra wheel/tire as a spare, I am afraid you just wasted some money. You cannot create enough wear on your extra tire to help it blend in with the others.

Rotating your wheels, front to rear and same side only, at each oil change is the best way to insure even wear and tire longevity.

BTW, tires do have a shelf life of about 5-7 years. Storing tires for later use is not a good idea.

FWIW all 2003+ cars should not require the 4-at-a-time tire replacement. The electronically controlled center differenctial (HALDEX or DEM or something similar) takes care of more of the problem.

4 tires is always preferred to 2, and always have your best 2 on the back wheels (unless you have an early AWD with a Viscous Coupler which requires the 2 'largest' tires - which would normally be the 2 in the newest condition - to be on the front axle if you can't manage 4 tires. Even that is a bit risky.)

As far as tire rotation goes, the conventional wisdom is that AWD cars need to rotate the front tires to the rear, and the rear tires to the front and cross to the opposite side. AFAIK Volvo now recommends against this, rotating only front to back and vice-versa. This is esp true for directional tires which cannot be run in the 'wrong' direction.
