Audio System S40-V40 2001

I just bought a S40 Volvo yesterday and notcied that it did not

include a CD Player. At first I thought all Volvo's came with a

CD player. I really want a CD player in my car and was advised

by my friends to buy a Clarion or any other aftermarket cd player.

The only problem with buying an aftermarket CD Player is that you

would have to fill in the space left from the big stock Volvo

AM/FM deck. Should I get a stock cd player or an aftermarket cd player?

Could you suggest me some aftermarket cd players that would fit

on the Volvo? Price is a big concern.

i have a 2001 S40 with a volvo cd player. I am having problems with it not playing copied cds(CDRS). If this is not a concern for you the stock cd player is pretty nice. However, I have many cds that I cannot listen to in my care and I am not to happy about it.

      Chris,

What brand of CDR are you using? This is sometimes the problem, but i wouldn't put it past Volvo that they would set it up this way to piss people off LOL!

I am using TDK CDRs. I want to play CDR's on my car. Will the Alpine CD Changer work for my car to play TDK's? How much does it cost and how much do you think to install? Could you give me a specific model?

If you have a 2001 S/V40 you are not going to be able to install an aftermarket remote CD player.

TDK cdr's shouldn't be a problem playing in cd players, I do not know if they will work in the Volvo ones though. I haven't used TDK, i've only used the verbatim and sony's.

Get in touch with Don at volvoparts.com and tell him what kind of car you have and that you would like a cd changer for it. I'm assuming your S40 is pre-wired for the cd changer? I was just installing some tweeters in the rear deck of mine and counted an 8 pin connector. I will probably be talking with Don tomorrow, I will see if he has a cd changer around and i'll check and see if it plugs in direct, I think that you will need an adapter though. Anyone else here had experience with the 2001 cd changer thing?

    Re: Audio System S40-V40 2001

    Chris,

I purchased my S40 bone stock (it is a project car) and I will be installing an aftermarket JVC cd player. The cool thing about having to do your own install is the fact that you can get creative with your installation. I'm not saying you should go out and get crazy with a cd player that doesn't match your interior (it's hard nowadays since everything looks like it belongs in a spaceship) but, you know what I mean. And of course you can always take the route of getting the Alpine cd changer if you're just looking to upgrade to play cd's.

    my 2 cents

      Carlos,

I am really (actually, EXTREMELY) curious to see how you are going to activate your CD player through yoour Volvo radio. Without being a mechanic, I doubt that you will be able to and I think that you will be wating your $$$ by buying that CD changer. All 2001 S/V40s have almost the same audio set up as the 2001 S60s, V70s and S80s, which needs software input/activation (for any changes) from the VADIS cart. And VADIS only has updates for Volvo units.

The prewiring is a $27 option but it has to be ordered WITH the car by the Volvo Retailer.

        Yannis,

Well my cd player won't be playing through the radio, it's replacing the radio, and I plan on bypassing the stock power wire and connecting it directly to a constant 12V source. I was lucky enough to get the schematics for the electrical in the 2001 S40 so it shouldn't be difficult at all.

$27? I could have swore I got charge $75 or something like that!

        Have a good week everyone!

2001 model year cars will only take the 10 disc Volvo cd changer. Also, don't assume your car is pre-wired. The retailer had to order it that way.

I have 2000 v40 w/o cd player. My stock Volvo radio has cd changer control capabilities. So i jest added a cd changer. Alpine (6 disk) is the only brand that works with Volvo stock radio. Plus you need an interface adapter.

Paid: $250 for changer + $75 for adapter.

      Al,

Sounds exactly like what I'm planning on having done to my 2000 V40. Where did you put the changer? Does it fit in the glovebox?

        Re: Audio System S40-V40 2001

        Matt,

Well this is something I debated over for some time. I thought about the glove box but I didn't want to loose the space. Under the seats is not an option because the air vent are in the way. The only solution I could think of was to put the changer behind the spare tire. There is a space between the spare tire and tire well wall (towards back seat). What I did was mount the changer to the underside of the spare tire carpet cover. So the changer lifts up with the cover. I use the red hook to hold up the cover. That way you have easy access to the changer and the magazine can pop in and out easily.
