Help, car won't start V70-XC70 2001

My 2001 XC70 won't start - I think it's related to the fuel system?

Yesterday, I drove maybe 5 miles across town, parked it for about an hour. When I started it up to drive home, it ran very rough and kept dying. The red triangle lit up on the dash with an ominous "check engine" message. The car was low on gas, but the low fuel light was not on. After a few attempts, it finally stayed running and I drove it to the gas station and filled it up. It was running fine after that, and the "check engine" light and message went away.

Then, last night, I drive it to the grocery store less than a mile away. 20 minutes later, I try to start the car and it wouldn't turn over. However, this time, there's no red triangle lit up or "check engine" message or rough running. I walked home, returned an hour later, cranked it plenty but it still wouldn't turn over, not even sputter.

I'm wondering if these two events are related? I'm wondering if it's something with the fuel system, though wouldn't I have noticed rough running or loss of power? Maybe the fuel pump died?

Sounds like the check engine light(CEL) was due to misfires rather than an electrical problem. To verify the fuel pump working, turn off the radio and cabin blower and turn the key to on, position II. Listen for the 2-3 second whirr of the fuel pump as it is supposed to pressurize the system.

If you brought a screwdriver with you, you could carefully press in on the schrader valve at the end of the fuel rail. If there is normal pressure, it will spray a lot of gasoline out, so be careful!

If the pump is not working, leave the key in position II and bang on the tank just behind the passenger seat and under the car. The shock might just get it turning.

Replacing a fuel pump is very labor intensive! The rear drivetrain needs to be lowered so the tank(s) can be dropped down.

Thanks Klaus for your reply - I will go grab my hammer and give it a try!

I had listened for the fuel pump but didn't hear anything, but I'll grab an assistant to turn the key so I can be right next to it to listen.

If it is the fuel pump, well, now there's a full tank of gas to drain - maybe I can find a good samaritan who will syphon my gas for me ;-)

There are times when the wiring to the pump gets loose and shorts out.

Don't hit the tank hard!! Just vibration should do it.

I had someone toggle the key between off and position II while I had my head down by the tank, and I heard a whirring noise each time. As a result, I opted not to check the fuel pressure at the rail.

I did think the whirr was high pitched, but I'm only comparing it to my 240 and older Honda - not sure if that's to be expected?

I appreciate any other suggestions you may have, guess I'll start looking at the ignition system.

High pitch is good. Check the connection for the cam position sensor. And make sure your car is unlocked.

Follow-up: I brought it into the shop for a look, they hooked it up to the computer and determined that the ETM is bad (original, w/ 120k miles).

Leading up to this, the car had a surging idle issue noticeable when the car was in park or stopped at a light. However, the car had never stalled on me before - RPMs would just fluctuate between about 700 and 1200.

The shop is quoting $1200 to replace the ETM and do a software update. Sounds like this job is out of my hands due to the software update required? It would be a new ETM w/ a 1 year warranty.

Also, I've heard how bad the ETMs in these cars can be, but I thought I got more warning?

                ETM V70-XC70 2001

                quick, look at www.xemodex.com
It is a Canadian firm and will replace the 'innards' of your ETM so a software update is not required. The improved ETM will never fail again, and MUCH cheaper.
