Diagnostic Tools ALL

Hi all,

I am in UK and would like some input from you clever guys regarding diagnostic tools. I am willing to purchase the tool to read diagnostic codes through the diagnostic socket on later cars (95-)

Unfortunately nobody in UK can provide a tool with software that can read codes, reset service light and be able to scroll through information on all systems. It is no use if it can read only engine management, or only reset service light interval etc.

I need the tool that can do all for fuel/ignition, ABS, SRS, Transmission etc.

Any ideas who I can contact to purchase this?

Appreciate your good help.

Regards.........Karl

    Spooky !

Here I am about to buy 2nd hand an 855 -1996 in the UK, lifted bonnet (hood) Haynes Manual in hand - Oops where's the diagnostic sockets ?

After a swift surf, I interpret that Mr Volvo whipped it off post 1995, and ditto - I shall ask and report in due course, can't be that clever, I'm an electronics eng. got to be an RS422 port or even less.

    Cheers,

    Ian W.

      Hi Ian,

You know that the diagnostic socket is there under the coin holder in front of the gear stick eh?

Only trouble is you need that special tool to diagnose through the OBD socket.

        Re: Diagnostic Tools ALL 96

        Hi Karl,

Ta for the tip re. socket, I'm coming up to speed.

        Righto. Lots of surfing later, it would appear OBD started in the USA, now we have E (Euro) OBD beginning 1st Jan 2001 in Europe ! Anyway, I have found the following;

        www.asttools.com

        http://technictool.com/retriever.htm

They seem to make, appear to manufacture perhaps only distribute, the sexiest "scanner" / code reader handheld unit, with all the correct software for the Volvo 850 '96 and others. Technictool sell it for US$1600

        not a misprint.

        www.obd-2.com

This a sort of poor man's PC software with an RS232 isolated box thrown in for US$130 -ish. This is OBD-II generic software, so you need to 'decode' the error codes. Nice links to the standards docs etc.

        www.sptools.co.uk

Sykes-Pickavant Ltd - what a name ! They do a thing call an ACR - which claims Volvo plug-in modules. Price ? - Who knows.

        http://aeswave.com/

Do a rather nice looking PalmPilot add-on - US$369 palmpilot not included, which claims "generic OBD-II" and also a PC software and cable product called PC-EASE - US$690 for the cheap option.

So, its surely a case of Volvo-fans-UK club members all sharing one; for a weekend each I think !

        Cheers,

        Ian.

I decided to order this poor man tool. Alex (the developper) told me that it will work to read and reset code on a Volvo OBD-2 port. It is due to arrive Friday 2 Feb. I will be testing it right away because I need to reset a code (the gas cap was not screw properly). I will know soon if it is working properly on Volvo car.

            Hi LM,

Super. Please let us all know how the software goes, I'm tempted.

            Cheers,

            Ian W.
