Why is the air intake seemingly blocked? S70 1998

Was a mistake made at the factory that the air intake seems to be blocked on my S70? Right in front of the radiator (driver's side) there is a rectangular shape held on by a screw that is approximately at the two o'clock postion from the horn. It seems to me that this is blocking most of the air flow. Is this the correct design or did someone at the factory forget to take off the little rectangular part? Maybe I am making something out of nothing. Can anyone give me some information on this?

Thanks,
George

Air requires very little space to get into the intake. Your car is normal. Increasing the opening just introduces the likelyhood for more water to enter on a rainy day.

There are at least 2 'restrictive' parts to the intake, one at the grille and the other at the airbox. This allows the air to expand and slow down, loosing dirt and water, before getting to the filter.

      Klaus,

Thanks. The way you explained it makes a lot of sense. I'm not into horsepower gains through air box modifications, so it is good to know that the air flow is not being restricted.

Now I just need to drive it and get rid of a "not ready" code before inspection.

      George
