Long time to prime and crank 850 1995

1995 854T 200,000 miles

I'm curious about how long an 850 fuel pump usually takes to prime after turning to KPII - but not starting. It seems that ours takes almost about 6 - 7 seconds to prime.

Then the engine will need around 3 - 4 seconds of cranking to start.

Maybe it's normal, but both waiting periods seem unusually long to me. I'm used to most cars that will take maybe 2 seconds to prime and then barely need to crank to start. Just seems like a long time.

The records I got with the car say the filter was changed about 30K ago. It does look pretty rusty, but a few New England winters will do that. There's new plugs, cap, rotor and air filter.

The car is not here and I haven't had a chance to check fuel pressure yet. Can't remember, does an 850 have a schrader valve on the fuel rail like a S40? That makes it awfully easy to check the fuel pressure.

Fuel pump is not noisy, but I think it is the original.

The car runs pretty well, but I just hate to have to crank it so much to start.

Long time to prime and crank 850 1995

At about 143,000 miles my 855T was getting harder to start in the morning, taking up to 10 seconds to fire then running roughly for a couple of seconds afterwards.

One day, it just refused to start. Fortunately, in my driveway. I confirmed spark and fuel dribbled out of the schrader valve on the fuel rail.

In the KPII position I heard the pump run a few seconds, then when shorting the relay to force the pump on I also heard it run. But no fuel from the removed schrader. Replaced the filter and poured the contents out of the old one. Black as Coke. Put a new pump in and it fired up almost instantly.

I didn't dissect the old pump to see what had happened, but I suspect that the diaphram and other rubber parts had rotted and were what I found in the filter.

May be time for a fuel pump but try the filter first.

That's a lot of miles for a fuel pump, but I would check other things first. The fuel pressure regulator is prone to failure at that age, so check the vacuum line that comes from the fuel rail to the vacuum tree for raw gasoline.

Checking the fuel pressure is a pain because the top mount is in the way. You need a flexible hose between the schrader valve and the gauge.

The car could be experiencing a bad back flow preventer between the filter and the pump.

    EDIT:
My 1995 always took a long time to crank, 3-5 sec. Never found the reason for it. The PFR did die, but then it was taking 15+ seconds when cold and the exhaust blew black smoke. I only had 95K miles on it.
