C70 inspected. Couple of issues C70 1998

Yesterday I looked at the '98 C70. Overall, the car is in good shape. It's loaded with all possible options and very clean inside and out. I was able to detect couple of issues. First, there is a noise coming from rear wheels when transmission shifted in R and the car starts moving backward. It is heard only for a moment. Does not look like it is something related to pads/rotors. (Only when going backward.) Anybody had this on C70? Second, the Dolby audio system. It is an older model (900), and it occasionally gives a loud echo. Is it a design problem? Somebody mentioned here that dealers can replace the 900 models with a newer 901 models. How common is that?

(The current owner is aware of the problems but did not address them until this point. He rarely drives the car and is committed to sell it ASAP.)

Re: C70 inspected. Couple of issues C70 1998

Was the parking brake set before you backed up in reverse?

The parking brake is a drum brake (the rear uses a disk brake

and drum brake "combo") and maybe it is sticking a bit?

My parking brake does stick after washing the car if the brake

is set and I did not first drive the car to heat them up and

dry them off (the wet brakes quickly develop a coating of rust

and this really causes the drum brake to stick).

Also, a slight metallic ring is common when the automatics are

first put into reverse (my wife's 95 does that).

Under day-to-day use I have not heard any sound from the rear

wheels (just the sticky parking brake after a car wash).

Note that I don't have a C70 but I think much of the powertrain

is the same as my S70 (but the rear suspension may differ a bit).
