Help! - Advice needed for roof rack wind noise V70-XC70 2001

My dealer has just mounted a (Volvo) roof rack with the ski rack attachment on my 2001 XC and the wind noise is terrible. Any suggestions as to exact placement of the rails or any other methods of keeping the noise down.

Secondly, read other comments re remote problems. I've just had to have a new rear mirror/sensor console replaced as my remote thought that the 'lock' button was the 'panic' button - on both remotes! It wasn't simply a matter of reprograming the rmote and was really annoying on a one month-old car. Othe than that the car's great.

Re: Help! - Advice needed for roof rack wind noise V70-XC70 2001

I use Thule load bars on a Volvo factory rail system (V70 01). I carry bikes or skis. The parts will or will not whistle depending on placement. Try positioning further aft. I get the quietest bike carry with my fork mount with the bikes facing backwards. (This position allows the bikes to be carried very far back on the roof - facing forward, the rear gate hits the rear tire.) I wouldn't use a full fairing because there is a good chance the panel will abrade the roof of your car (so I have read). I have purchased and occasionally use with some success the Yakima accessories called "Wind Jammers." They are small detachable wings that go around the load bars to disrupt the air flow, which is sometimes all that is need. They only cost about $6 each from a Yakima dealer. Quite minimal and attractive. They are meant to go around the round-section Yakima bars but can be snapped around the square Thules. If you move things around (experiment on the road), I'm confident you will be able to get things quieted down. Best wishes. Have no probs with remotes.

Sondagsakare - thanks for the advice. I'll try moving the racks back!

Did they install a fairing on the roof rack? If not this should be helpful in reducing the wind noise.

Carlos, no they didn't. As the rack will be a largely seasonal (winter) fixture, I'm not sure if I want a permanent fairing. Do you happen to know if it makes any difference where on the vehicle the cross bars are situated?

Ian: my 01 XC has been at the dealer 7 days now(they gave me a loaner). First they ordered new remotes, that did not completely solve it. Yesterday they told me they had a "module" on order. Is this "module" they are referring to possibly the sensor unit that you had replaced?

Yes, other than this electrical/software/remote problem, the car has been a real joy since October!

Yup, this was the module. It was on back order and I too was given a loaner car. Got the car back yesterday so fingers crossed. I hope it sorts out your problem too. Good luck!
