Just some observations S60 2007

So after about 4000 miles on a new to be '07 S60 I have observed a few things. Perhaps they are for the better, for the worst, or just indifferent.

Previously I have owned:
91 740
98 S70
92 240
98 V70XC
*current '07 s60

In both 70 series cars I noticed they both appeared to have stainless steel exhaust; s60 from the downpipe back seems to be rusting quite alarmingly. In addition the x70 cars (and IIRC the 240 and 740) had the red lights in the doors that "alert" others your door is open. The S60 does not.

**Others may disagree but….the stock...and I mean standard issue HU650 audio system in the S60 is of lesser fidelity than the stock no frills system in the V70XC. Although the s60 has two extra speakers, sits nicely in the dash, and has the OEM sat tuner I have found that the S60 speakers reach their mechanical limits when turned up much earlier than that of the 98 XC. I have noticed the speakers can reproduce quite a bit lower (est 25 Hz..and when low volume) but find that I am constantly fiddling with rolling the bass from "center notch" all the way to the max negative limit especially when playing newer top 40 at higher volume. I feel the XC may have had a high pass at maybe 45 Hz built right in to the deck which minimized the bottoming out. I also found the highs to be a bit crisper in the XC than with the S60. Again I get the fact that in both cars I had/have the entry level system and that the premium audio system avail for the S60 with the HU850 sounds very nice....but again just an area that I have noticed.

What is unfortunate about the HU650 is that I feel it looks nice with respect to the driver oriented center console. I considered upgrading the deck (gain hi pass functionality for the oem speaker) and adding a modest Infinity Basslink to help the lows out. I think the aftermarket dash kits are horrible, would loose the steering wheel controls (although Alpine...my favorite..has a steering wheel control kit I believe) and then have to also monkey around and get a new Sat tuner as I am sure the OEM tuner is proprietary and will not play well with others ;-).

So..I called IPD to get a feel on whether they heard rumor of a new Bluepower system...which would actually be incredibly awesome for the car but they had no comment. I suggested in the meantime seek to create sleek and elegant OEM dash kit that does not look like the crap ones I have seen. I do like the little side pocket in the factory setup as I put my cell phone in it; I have a nice case that keeps it from sliding out :) For the time being I will keep the stock setup, and maybe just add the Infinity basslink into the trunk. It seems to have speaker level inputs, nice gain controls, HPF, and a nifty wired remote to roll back the bass if needed. Thinking I will wire it off the rear speakers, roll back the bass on the deck to avoid mechanical bottoming out of the OEM speakers - while increasing the gain on the Infinity...test and retest and tweak it and call it a day for the time being.

Lastly, I am not a fan of the cheap plastic lenses for the headlights. Although they are nice and clear there are too many chances for scratches, hazing, etc. I guess I could replace the lens only if needed but I don't know...even the x70 platform had glass lenses and built in levels to adjust as necessary.

- End Rant -

Steve

Maybe the problem is the top 40 tunes? How is the car's handling and drivetrain?

Dan, I agree, see below for points about power, etc.

Hi Steve, I'm happy you didn't take offense at the good natured ribbing concerning the top 40 tunes ;) Your new Volvo sounds like a very nice ride and looks great in the picture...love the color! I am in southern Ma. and all we have had here so far is a trace of snow. What a difference from a year ago when we were having a "storm of the week" every week. I had to shovel off my roof 4 times last winter! Oh well, feast or famine I guess. I do feel badly for the ski area operators though. To me, nothing is more depressing than brown ground in the mountains.

How does it drive compared to the others? Handling, ride, power, comfort etc. Is it sportier?

Driving and handling is a totally different beast than the x70 platform. The car has a factory strut tower brace and it handles very well.

The 2.T paired with the 5 spd automatic provide enough power to get around...and then some. Right now I have BF Goodrich Super Sport G-Force A/S tires which supposedly are decent. They do handle very well and have a stiff sidewall. From a dead stop if you go wide open there is actually too much power off the line and causes wheel spin (instantly corrected by the DSTC system)....but I've only experienced this a few times as most spirited driving for me tends to be more on the highway or when passing ;-)

Got a true taste of the DSTC system today actually. We finally got some snow in central MA today. I was getting off a highway during the early morning commute. Come to find the offramp had glazed over as it was only 30 out...nice amount of frozen slush and black ice. Felt the rear end start to slide out from underneath me and then in a split second the DSTC came alive and started applying varying brakes and the car was out of the impending skid and I went on my merry way to work. I was VERY impressed by the performance of the system. Back in the day with either my RWD or x70 cars I would have tried to fix this situation like a boss by using the e-brake, ample throttle, or whatever keen idea came to my head during the split second - meanwhile the S60 performed without a hitch. Trunk is very deep though, and there are some nice creature features like folding rear headrests, valet lock system (will likely never use this tough). There are two air outlets build into the B pillars? (between from and rear doors. I'd imagine this will be nice in the summer as far as A/C performance and distribution. Overall the ECC climate is very efficient, and quiet!

The overall ride quality is very nice, seats are awesome! Forget it though if you have thoughts of putting someone in the back seat if you are driving (and tall)....I am 6-2 and I was having to cramp up really forward in order for someone to sit behind. I suppose if you have youngsters this wouldn't be a problem until they are much older. The doors are solid but there is not a convenient place to rest your left elbow when driving. On the x70 cars I recall having at least enough space to comfortable rest my arm on either the top part of the inner door assembly (where it meets window)...or back my elbow into the space where the window controls where - while then comfortably steering with the left hand. The S60 is a little more akward - less space.

Variable wipers are nice as well.

Even just being the LPT I find the comfort, power, and handling to be leaps and bounds better than earlier generation Volvos... Only concerns other than my small gripe about the sound (which is still better than most other OEM standard car audio systems BTW....) is the maintenance schedule. The book indicates that under normal circumstances the tranny and antifreeze are not a scheduled maintenance item. They only get changed if you drive the car in desert mountains with high temperatures and hauling a trailer....because so many people do this? - Tranny fluid in mine is sad and needs to be changed.

I'll file these comments away for when I'm getting ready to buy my next new car.

Thanks for the info, Steve. Enjoy your new (to you..:>) car!

        Jim
