ABS/Anti-skid service notification lights on, but only sometimes XC90 2004

My xc90 (2004, 107 K miles 2.5t engine) has had the ABS warning light come on, along with a message indicating service is required for ABS and Anti-Skid systems. Is this something I can do myself? Can I drive the car safely until this gets checked?

I read on Matthew's Volvo Site that the issue might be the Steering Angle Sensor, which needs adjusting, but, similarly, I cannot seem to determine whether this is a do-it-myself type of job.

Hoping to avoid exorbitant costs and hours of diagnostic service charges.

Thanks, as always.

ABS light means that the abs is not working, so you might be able to lock up the brake(s) and skid. Only a hassle when wet or icey conditions.

As far as the steering angle, I have no knowledge and you should post on Matthews for that. I would imagine that you would need a volvo specific code reader to determine if that is the case.

Some dealers will not charge you for diagnostics if you get the car fixed at the same time. Unlike my Audi dealer that charges $107 to read the code and then adds repair time to the bill :<

Have you had any recent front brake work or struts replaced , I had the same intermittent problem on my 05 v70 ,it turned out that the abs wire was not put back into its place and was able to chafe on the tire and wore part way through. put in a new sensor with wire now it is gone but you could likely solder it as well ,hope this helps
