Hello all,
Some time ago I reported that my alternator went south, and that caused some of the dash lights to stay on. The low fuel light and the service light are now on, and wont go off. The computer says they are off, but the computer is wrong.
Your helpful ideas on what the problem was were 1) a worn wiring harness, and 2) burned out circuit board on the instrument cluster. The dealer checked the wiring harness, and couldnt find a problem. Now we want to try the circuit board.
Here's the issue now. VCNA paid for the alternator on warranty (Volvo Certified Preowned Limited Warranty), but wont commit to paying for the circuit board until we can show that 1) that is the problem, and 2) it was caused by the alternator failing. So if I get it replaced and that doesnt fix the problem, I have to pay. Or, if I get it replaced and that fixes the problem, but VCNA decides that it was unrelated to the alternator, then I have to pay. My service manager wasnt too confident that VCNA would pay - he has a pretty low opinion of their generosity on what it thinks are borderline cases.
So, do I get the circuit board replaced? What are the odds it will fix my problem? My mechanic's other solution is to pull the light bulbs. My hesitation on going the cheap route is that I dont know what else went wrong on the dashboard, and when I go to sell the car, I have to explain all this to the buyer.
Thanks for your help.
