Lighting on instrument panel poor V70-XC70 2004

I like this car except for the back lighting and the overly busy speedometer. If there is any significant ambient light the message windows are not readable. This is even turned up all the way. Is there any way to brighten these lights or replace them. Believe they may be LED's on the '04.

Open to suggestions as always.
