@#%&! Service Light 850 1995

I took my 850 to the local Volvo Guru to fix a problem with my starter. My service light was on as well and I asked him to reset it. He says that he tried 3 different methods to reset it but was having an interface problem with the car's computer. Now I have my car back with the service light stil on. He told me that no one will be able to reset it. Does anyone have any ideas or will I just have to remove the bulb? I have to replace the clock bulb anyway. Thanks for any advice!

    Re: @#%&! Service Light 850 1996

I have a similar problem - my service light is lit and the technician cant turn it off. The diagnostic tool says it is not lit. The same thing for my low-fuel light. This started when my alternator died.

The only idea my mechanic has now is to replace the circuit board, but Volvo wont commit to covering that under the certified warranty (they did pay for the alternator). I'm hoping someone can help me decide whether to take the risk of replacing the circuit board. If it doesnt fix the problem, I have to pay for the "repair". If it does fix the problem, Volvo _might_ pay for it.

      Re: @#%&! Service Light 850 1995

Thanks for the tip Michael.I had not noticed those instructions before. Unfortunatley I cannot make the box "talk" to the dash. I guess that is the interface problem my mechanic was talking about. Are there any problem areas with the reset controls that I should look for? The LED will light but not blink to indicate communication.Any other suggestions?

        Re: @#%&! Service Light 850 1995

Sorry mate, but I can't help any further than that... I have a nil-mod 1995 850 too, and so I am not sure whether Rich's solution will help you or not. Mine resets via the diagnostic ports only and there is nothing on the dash as Rich describes. Hopefully that's an aussie thing and yours has the grommet.

Can you get any signals out of the LED, such as when you put the plug into A2? Perhaps the 1-1-1 code?

Anyway, I would love to know what's going on as I might have a slightly similar problem: my A1 & A2 communicate fine but my A7 does not talk. Perhaps it is just poor connections to the port in question, or elsewhere on the system. One of my ports (either A1 or A2) gives an ambient lower voltage glow as soon as I put the plug in, and the other does not (can't remember which is which, & nowhere near the car at the moment). Perhaps this is normal. Can anyone else out there help?

Alas, I don't have the grommet reset button. I have not tried any other communications through that port, but I'll see what I can get tomorrow. I only found Bay13 at VolvoSpeed a few days ago so I need to get a little more familiar with my car. I do plan to attempt the shifter microswitch replacement with their instructions soon....Well, if I get anywhere with the port connections I'll post them ASAP.

If you have a small rubber gromet on your instrument cluster, center bottom, pull the gromet off and us a small object to push in the reset button behind it.
