here's one for the volvo techs! 850 94

hi, my check engine light will come on instantly upon startup even after i clear all codes. the code is 1-4-3. it's for the front knock sensor. if i hook into the pin for this ,i think it's # a2 at ecm the sensor works great if you hit it lightly and check it with a labscope. but i can't verify the ground. if i ground labscope to the block its fine but if i ground to the pin # a17 i think i can't verify the sensor. i checked the cam timing it's fine and also car shows signs of not having quite the snap it used to have. any help would be appreciated as i'm much better at the rear wheel drive models...thanks to all

Re: here's one for the volvo techs! 850 94

It's usually an intermittant fault code and there's no real good method to check the knock sensor itself (rarely the cause anyways). That code/problem is not unusual for '94 850 turbos and there's a SB on "upgrading" the two knock sensors for a kit where they're both hardwired together as it's sometimes (thought to be) a connection problem BUT not always.

I experienced and read here too that after the knock sensors are replaced (usually the first step and cheapest place to begin), the code on some cars still re-appears. It then is finally repaired by replacing the ECU (internal problem) which isn't cheap.

If I were you, I'd start by first cleaning the original knock sensor connection (remove it from the sensor, spray contact cleaner on it, connect/re-connect it several times, then apply di-electric grease into the plug). See if the code then re-appears (might take weeks)

There's 3 possible causes for that code and no great method IMHO to properly diagnose it right the first time as it's intermittant and not duplicateble:

    1) bad knock sensor or bad connection at knock sensor

    2) wiring between knock sensors and ECU

    3) ECU

I've never seen where it was #2 (not yet).

hi john, thanks for the input, the wierd thing about this is that after the codes are cleared and i get a 1-1-1 out of the diagnostic socket, the code reappears almost instantly as soon as i start the car and let it idle.

the knock sensor mount is clean as a whistle and what a bear to get to. and i verified operation with a labscope. i wonder if i should plug in another ecm and then try it. i suppose that would be the quickest fix. thanks again
