Does 2001 V70 2.4T have Balance shaft or other type of Vib dampening? V70-XC70

wife's 2001 V70 (~140,999. mi.) is running rough Thump, thump, thump with noticeable vibration. Local mechanic found nothing wrong other than a worn exhaust system. Active codes are for evap leak and knock sensor. So, I think there may be a mechanical balance issue. Something may have broken. thoughts?

Mercedes Benz first used a 5 cylinder engine to get a bit more power without a lot of parts expense - they just added a cylinder to their 4.

JUST is a poor word, as they came up with a new method to manufacture the crank - the result was a VERY smooth engine with evenly spaced power pulses.

You may need a new mechanic on this one.

I would try a good dealer.

My pure guess - trouble with the system that changes valve timing if your car has that feature.

The beauty of a 5 cyl engine, the 5th cyl is the balancer.

A leaky exhaust needs to be fixed, it will affect back pressure and change the gas/air ratio, resulting in rough running. The knock sensor will also change the ratio. If the code is for a bad knock sensor, that is not a fun job because the intake manifold needs to be removed to do the replacement. There are 2 knock sensors, both will need to be replaced by a person that knows these engines.

If you have been using 87 octane, that will cause the knock sensors to change the gas/air ratio and also make the system run rich when you try to accellerate.

The EVAP code is separate and has nothing to do with running bad, in most cases. Usually a clogged or broken line.
