Engine stalling / related gas smell? 850 1994

Our wagon has had 4 - 5 episodes (happens every 1 - 2 months) where the engine just looses power and dies (just like the ignition was turned off, no sputtering). My wife was driving it today and it happened, she says there was a smell of raw gasoline. Up to now, every time it quits we wait 1 - 2 minutes, crank it back up and it goes along like nothing happened. Volvo shop kept it for a week, of course it would not do it then, they could not figure anything wrong. I am carrying my Torx screwdriver and a new fuel pump relay in case, but i am beginning to question, relays typically just quit. is there a way to check condition of the MAF, TPS? i hate to wait until it finally quits, for my luck it will be in the middle of nowhere!

When it happens again, pull all of the codes in A2 and A6, before you attempt to restart.

If the fuel pump relay dies, which it can do with increasing frequency, then there will not be a gas smell. If MY wife were driving, I would just replace the relay and leave the old one in the glove box. That would eliminate one variable.

Check the small vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator (at the fuel rail) to the vacuum tree. If there is any gas in the line, the regulator died.
