Short in the inside light circuit V70-XC70

Battery drains over night. Have determined that the inside dome light and the drivers side footwell light stays on sometimes when the drivers door is closed. If the door is closed firmly the light goes out. Appears to be a short in the inside light circuit. The switch must be in the door lock because cannot see any pressure switch on the door frame. Any help or direction on this problem appreciated. Is this a common problem?
Thanks
Peter

You are correct, it is in the door lock. There is a small metal switch, black, at the base of the lock which you can push toward the outside to 'close' the door and turn off the lights. To put the switch back in the unlock position, just hit the unlock switch or pull on the inside door handle. The door will not close unless the switch is in the unlocked position.

So... you have an adjustment problem with the lock because if you slam the door, the micro switch turns off. The latch and the striker are both adjustable, if you have a good torx driver.

Thanks for direction Klaus...have adjusted plate on the door and the footwell light goes out on every door closure.
Have another problem now...when the dome light is in the door activation mode the light stays on after door closure and instead of fading out (as it should do)it stays alight.
Not sure whether the door switch or the dome light assembly switch is faulty. Any advice on how to check appreciated.

At present have disconnected the dome light otherwise the battery drains.

Thanks
Peter

The dome light goes through a relay, the relay has a timer. That is a 3 position switch - on,off,door/relay. The same relay is used for both doors. I would suspect the switch is faulty.

Thanks for information Klaus. I guess there is no way of checking the courtesy lighting relay other than replacing with a new one?
Have looked but can't find the subject relay, any idea where it is located.

Thanks
Peter

Did you check the dome light switch? Those relays seldom go bad. A bad wire could do the same thing. Remember the lights to either side of the center dome light are only on/off and will stay on with the key out.

For a wiring diagram to your 2000:

It is rather LARGE and you might want to save it on your PC for future use.

Klaus thanks for the link. The courtesy light relay appears to be horizontally mounted (with about 10 others) below the fuse box. The reference # is I believe 17i and the part # 9148748. Volvo quote about $300 which seems exorbitant for a relay. Do you know if the fuse box comes out easily? Thanks for all your help.
Peter

The fuse tray in the engine compartment comes out with the removal of a few trox screws. This is the tray closest to the windshield.
$300 for a relay????

Hi Klaus the courtesy light relay has been identified as part # 9148748, which I find on the relay board below the fuse box accessible under the dash on the driver's side in the 212 position on the board. However, when I remove the relay it indeed has the part # 9148748 stamped on it but indicates "Seat Belt Reminder" on the relay case. Volvo say the relay has dual use, ie, for the seat belt reminder and the courtesy lights.
I cannot find any reference to a courtesy light relay on the V70 wiring diagrams/list of relays.
Before I pay out $200 I want to be sure I am replacing the right relay.
Any insight appreciated.
Thanks
Peter

Relay help V70-XC70

I suggest looking elsewhere for a 'new' relay. Any bone yards around you? A pick&pull would be perfect, they usually don't charge much for a relay and then you could pick up a few extras, like headlight, fuel pump,...

Don't forget to call Erie Vovo if the local pickings are slim.
