It's been a couple of weeks since I had the 30k service done, and so far I see that the dealership:
a) Carefully let the 35psi I put in my tires down to 28psi.
b) Carefully removed all the light machine oil I lubed my radio antenna with, so that it makes a **skkrunch** noise when it retracts.
I can't wait to find some other piddly little details that they've "maintained" that I have to undo.
They're little things, too little to bother THEM with, but they annoy me enough to lightly vent here...

Geez, I had no idea I was gonna cause this firestorm...
Truth told, I really don't HAVE any large complaints about our car, and I like that. I really don't ever complain to the dealership, because all I have is little piddly things like I mentioned, that I just take care of myself.
So I think somebody picked the wrong "clueless new Volvo owner" to make an example of, because I really don't run around bothering dealerships with nothing-problems like he thinks, and defending this dealership is pointless, because I'm not attacking them...I'm just annoyed.
But I think you can take home a tactical victory, anyway, because I don't really feel like posting here again. What'd be the point?

As mentioned here, they did exactly what you paid them to do and it's written on the inspection sheet too. 30PSI is correct (most guages are off by a pound or two, yours or his) and cleaning, lubing the antenna is also part of the service as well. We use penetrating oil like WD-40 (suggested by Volvo too BTW, NOT silicon spray or engine oil).
IMHO, I think you're nitpicking as you think that this is a place where people can come and complain about dealerships in general. Keep in mind that some of us here work in dealerships and we try to do our jobs maintaining/repairing your cars as best possible, doing our jobs as required.
From now on, if you want your tires over-inflated and your antenna left alone (etc, etc), be sure to have the service writer type all that out so that the technician will ignore those items in the future.

30 psi?? My 850 owners manual recommends 36 psi for normal driving.

I just checked with a '95 850 sitting here in our shop. There's NO tire pressure info in the owners manual anywhere BUT inside the fuel filler door there's a sticker and you're almost right EXCEPT for ONE minor detail. It says "36 psi MAX for LOADED car, that's with 5 passengers totalling 920lbs additional weight. THEN (and only then) should you run 36psi.
Optional recommended pressure (below that) is 29psi, which is what ALL car tires should always be set at.
In my 24 yrs in the business, that's what most techs set tires too and I've never had one person complain to me directly about it either.
I do often leave tire pressures at a higher psi as I suspect that some prefer that, but 30psi is correct (give or take 2psi either way)

Forgive me for not remembering that the owners manual, page 5-4 doesn't actually list the recommended tire pressure, but instead refers one to the label inside the fuel filler door. We can argue about whether this statement incorporates the label into the owners manual, but this would be kinda like arguing about what the meaning of "is" is.
The fuel filler door label states that NORMAL tire pressure is 36/36. It says nothing about "fully loaded", etc. The label further states that "optional" tire pressure is 34/31. I'm unable to locate any mention of 30 psi on the label. But, what do I know? I'm just a stupid whining owner who should be happy that you professionals are smart enough to know that 36/36 really means 30/30.

I concur w/ John. On all 70s and 850s that is where we set the tire pressure and that is what we tell customers to do when they pick up their new cars.

Yes, the tire pressure info is on the fuel door, but it varies between models. Check your label before you set yours at 29 psi - my S70 (with 205/55R16 Tires) uses 34 psi front, 31 psi rear for reduced/optional load. It does recommend 36/36 for fully loaded, however.

The '98 S/V70 said 29psi but you're right in that although the car is exactly the same car, Volvo did change the written specs for 2 years on the S/V 70 (2WD) ('99-'00 only).
The S80s, S/V 40s and 2001 V70s now say 29psi again.
I have no idea why Volvo changed the written specs on those for 2 years only but the car itself didn't change at all for those 2 years.
My whole point here was only to note that no crime was commited, that's all.
If someone forgot to put oil in the engine or tighten wheels, it'd be a different story.

...I realize you think I'm a whiny brat, and that nothing I say will ever be right in your eyes.
Unless you work at Tom Wood Volvo/Jaguar/Porsche/Audi/Land Rover in Indianapolis, I don't understand why you defend that dealership so fiercely.
This is already more trouble than it's worth. Thank you.

Oh, so this is what you're ranting about above?
Sorry if I seem to jump on your case here BUT IMHO, if you really dislike any establishment then I fail to understand why you'ld take your car there and give them your business. If I felt as you do, I'd either go elsewhere or fix it myself (which was how I got into this business to begin with, failure to trust others workmanship).
I don't work even close to that dealership either btw but I do know a few things about the business and why some things happen as they do.
This is a technical support forum, not a place to rant about dealerships in general especially when you're obviously just nitpicking IMHO, not really being fair to them.

Why do I speak up here at times like this you ask?
I don't know what you do for a living but let's just say that you're a doctor and that we're at a medical forum instead, you being a doctor who'ld know a few things about the medical profession and me being a customer who's online but takes myself in for an occasion exam
(or whatever). Let's say that it was me then in that forum ranting about how I thought that doctors and hospitals, etc "suck" in general ("rip off, not listening, mis-diagnosis, etc",.....happens too does it?). Don't you think then that you'ld feel the urge to pipe in and say something? I bet you would.
Think about it next time, that's all I ask.

...I'm NOT ranting about dealerships in general. I'm complaining about one dealership. One dealership that I have no choice but to utilize.
I wish I could have our car serviced at the dealership I bought it from, but it's 3 hours away.

Yeah, but attitudes like that and the WAY you complain (along with others) contributes to the the "anti-dealer" ranting that takes place here when they are not here to defend themselves. You see comments here "I hate my dealer", "my dealer is dumb", "my dealer is SUPER-DUMB", etc. No one seems to mention that SOME customers are WACKOS and unreasonable!

That's exactly why I'll defend some of these "anti-dealer" rants here. Being that I work for one, try to do my best at a long time career, when I'm on my PC relaxing in my spare time trying to relax and here helping others at times, the last thing I need to do is feel defensive but some things here can't be ignored easily either (at least by me).
I try to ignore alot of it but there's times when someone needs to speak up, especially if it seems pretty unjustified IMHO.
At least no one's resorted to name calling here.....yet.

Let's just keep the posts at a technical level. This is not a forum of 'Volvo dealers' vs. 'the rest of the world' or vice versa. Anyway, I believe most people generally ignore 'whinner posts'. Cheers.

OK, but again it's a place where (according to your story), they did exactly what was required by Volvos 30K inspection sheet. I guess the only "crime" was that it's possible that the tech used the wrong lubricant on your antenna mast and that you'ld prefer to over-inflate your tires.............right?

The tires should only have 28 psi and the tech should also go around the car to lube it they put a lube on the antenna that is clear.

Charlie,
I'm not sure which x70 variant you have, but the recommended tire pressure for my S70 with 205/55R16 tires for normal loading is 36/36 psi (front/rear.) For light loading (driver only), pressure should be 34/31 psi.

Is that so that Grandma will be able to keep up with you in the corners in her Buick Roadmaster or because your uncle needs to make sure his Excursion won't lose sight of your "Brick" in the twisties?
28 lbs?? Not on my watch!
