Dashboard gauges dropout V70-XC70 2003

I need help. The dashboard gauges on my 2003 V70 2.4T are dropping out sporadically. Sometimes they stop working while I'm driving, in which case they just stop moving. Sometimes they don't come on at all when I turn on the ignition, in which case they remain dark. Sometimes they come back on while I'm driving and then maybe lock up again, or maybe not. A message "SRS IMMEDIATE SERVICE" comes on when the dashboard does light up. The message may go off after several days but will come back on again fairly quickly. Could the dropout be caused by bad supply voltage to a computer in one of the Control Modules, and is there a relay or a ground I should be looking at. Also should I disconnect the battery before I start poking around, and if I do disconnect the battery can I expect any reboot problems when I reconnect.

Thanks JRip

You have the common DIM problem. Go to www.xemodex.com for a repair price, the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg for replacement.

      Klaus;

Do I need a DIM ($350) or the circuit board for the DIM (not yet available).
Is there a relay or ground in the way of power to the DIM? I had a problem
with injector function on a 1990
Volvo 740 that turned out to be an intermittent in the relay that supplied
power to the injectors. The relay manufacturer used solder to anchor the
relay frame to the circuit board and also to supply a path to ground for
power to the injectors . The frame and fiberglass PC board have different
temperature coefficients, and with age and vibration the solder cracked in a
ring around the frame lug. This made the power to the injectors
intermittent. The computer tried to compensate but the car ran very
      strangely.

I'm an electronic engineer and can do some simple stuff, like resolder a
relay. I bought a copy of VADIS but the vcc-xxxxxx.htm files in Info don't
seem to line up with with the shell program that calls them up, so I haven't
been able to view any of the illustrations. If you have any suggestions
that would help I'd be very grateful.

I would give xemodex a call on Monday and ask for the price and availibility.

Yes, it probably is a result of weak soldering and high heat, which is why xemodex installs a new heatsink. But their repair will be a significant improvement over what is in there now.

Remember, if the SRS light comes on and stays on as you remove the DIM, it will not clear later. And only the dealer can do that.

Sorry to be so long getting back to you on this problem. I did contact the shop you recommended but they were very busy and never responded. I eventually took the gauge set to Southern Electronics in Richmond VA and waited while they rebuilt it (no new parts, just resoldered everything and put in new light bulbs). Cost was $300. Scandia in Reston VA reset the airbag/seatbelt message for me.

          Thanks again, jrip
