Need help with several issues all at once 850 1995

So my son's 95 850 Turbo with 150K started rough shifting and the other day it started running rough and then stalled. He got started and got it home. I pulled the OBDII codes: P0730(Incorrect Gear Ratio) P0172(Fuel Trim System Rich Bank 1) P0123(Throttle Position Sensor Circuit High Voltage).

My suspicion is that the transmission itself is fine. The fluid, while not cherry red, is red enough and it has no burnt smell. I suspect electrical components.

It will start sometimes but only run for a five seconds if it starts at all now.

Where do I start???? Thanks!

The P0730 from the tranny is no big deal yet, probably just a precursor for a soon be fail PNP switch. It has no bearing on the engine running.

The other two are a problem. The system running rich is probably a vacuum leak and fouling the spark plugs. The throttle position sensor could be in fact faulty, but is probably just dirty.

The best bet is to clear the codes and see which ones come back or will not delete. The TPS will shut down the engine when reading high.

EDIT: Try using the diagnostic boxes on the passenger fender for more specific fault codes.

      Thanks...as alway Klaus.

Klaus, is it the contacts/wiring harness that gets dirty on the TPS or is the inner workings requiring it be removed to clean it? I think FCP Groton and or eEuroparts sells it for $52 or so.

Should I replace it? And is that the starting to point to get the engine running? I found a disconnected vacuum line and reattached it too. But it still will not stay running.

I wonder why the vacuum line came off? They usually get so brittle that they break.

As to the TPS, it is probably dirty internally. If you can clean it, try that. Or get a 'new' one at a junk yard, they usually last a long time.

It was not the original vacuum line, I had replaced it about 18 months ago. It popped off near the fire wall and was dangling and then must have slid against the ex manifold because it was melted on that end. I snipped it clean and reattached. I ordered a new Bosch TPS for $35 with free shipping from FCPG.
