May need a new wheel bearing XC90 2004

I'm hearing noises that I think may be signs of a wheel bearing going bad; it's happened before on this car. I'm a little cash short right now and am hoping to postpone fixing it, but I don't want to do that if it will waiting might cause damage. Can a bad wheel bearing (rear) lead to other damage? Thanks, as always!

Hi, have 2 bearing jobs done.
    1. 850-94 with 240kkm front right hand (no stamp found)
    2. V70-06 with 120kkm front left hand (stamp "GZ", I assume China product)
both replaced with DSP's bearing housing

Easy on the cornering and it will last a while longer. Obviously, when the bearing gets destroyed, along with the hub plate, the wheel will start wobbling and become dangerous. Until that time, take it easy.

Shop around for a cheaper mechanic? Or DIY if the mechanics charge too much AND come to the same conclusion as to the noise source.

Thanks Klaus! Is it a fairly straightforward diy?

        Kind of: http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how_tos/volvo_brakes_wheels_repair/fwd_volvo_bearing_hub_replacement.html

One of the BB'rs had a problem with severe rust on the Torx screws and they didn't want to come off.

The axle nut is not reusable. The write up above makes it a little simpler than it is for us that only have hand tools. Taking the wheel off, removing the center cap, putting the wheel back on and resting it on the ground is a good tip to remove the stubborn axle nut. I have a 2 foot piece of 1 and 1/4 pvc pipe which fits nicely over the end of my ratchet to act as a torque extender.

A large hammer to pound in the axle to free it is needed, a normal 1 pound may not do it. Do not hit the aluminum alloy wheel! Usualy, the rotor falls off after removing the 10mm locating pin, sometimes it is so rusty that it just won't come off!

In other words, it can be quite simple, or Murphy can be laughing at you at each bolt.

i just did a hub bearing on a v70 yesterday. Not too bad but i certainly benefited by having a large compressor and impact driver to remove the axle nut. In addition, I used a long 1/2 in drive cheater bar to remove the 4 bolts that hold the hub carrier to the steering knuckle...they were very tight and some corrosion on the threads so would have been really difficult with just standard ratchet handle. I had replaced the axle within the past two years so the splines were not stuck to the hub splines so a few taps with the 2 lb mallet and a wood block released the axle from the hub. Total job took about 1.5hrs taking my time. i assume the v70 and the xc90 have similar hubs
