control arm confusion S70 1998

Finally got around to attempting to replace the control arms as an attempt to correct the car "floating" upon braking. The driver's side control arm bushings were compromised. The bushing closest to the front actually moved back and forth. The back bushing was torn on the outside.
I am stuck at this point trying to install the new Control Arm. I have mounted the arms to the chasis but cannot get the balljoint back into position. I swear the whole rotor assembly has moved about 1/3 of an inch outward. I thought that maybe the new Control Arm was short but it is the exact same length. I must have messed something up but haven't a clue what I did. I am stuck. Any ideas? George

The CV joint allows the axle to extend/contract as the suspension moves up and down. I believe if you push inward on the hub, you'll find that everything moves back in where it belongs.

You may find that the new control arm bushings make it difficult to pull down on control arm enough to slip the ball joint back into it. If that's the case, try leaving the control arm mounting bolts a bit loose until after the ball joint is in place. If that still doesn't help enough, here's something that worked for me...
I hung a large (maybe 5 or 6 inch) C-clamp over the leading edge of the lower control arm. Then I slid a 2 or 3 foot long pipe through the C-clamp and rested the end under the subframe. That gave me a lot of mechanical advantage to pull the control arm downward by prying down on the outboard end of the pipe. Then just be careful not to pinch your fingers when you slip the ball joint into the control arm and release pry bar.

Chris, that was it. It was a struggle of pushing side to side and back and forth but the axle went back in. Now it is time to put the wheel on and tighten the bolts and nuts of bushing part of the control arms. Thanks!

Tighten the control arm bolts with the car on the ground, NOT on jack stands.
