shimy S80 2002

Dear Klaus, et. al,

My '02 S80 2.9 w/159kmi developed a shimmy at speeds of 60+mph (after re-balancing and rotating the tires).

The shimmy is apparent at higher speeds, the frequency is speed dependent, the amplitude is cyclical (although not regular, the amplitude is zero to knock-your-fillings-out).

I first thought it was a wheel balance issue, but re-balancing did not cure the issue. It occurs on-throttle as well as off-throttle. The lower control arm bushings were deteriorated and so replaced, ball joints were replaced also, to no avail. The rack (which was replaced with the salvage one 50kmi ago (Volvo had a 95 unit back-order at the time) is a little loose. The CV joints appear ok. The tires have been rotated back to where they were, same condition still presents.

Any thought would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

R Stuart

Because it only started happening after tire rotation, and no pot holes/curbs were hit, I would take it to a reputable alignment shop and have them check it out. Not the same place where you got the tires done.

If there is an issue with the steering, the alignment shop will point it out. Most will do it free of charge. They also will check the CV joints. If there is nothing wrong and they complete the alignment for $80-100, ask where you should look to have a load test completed. You tire shop should have done that already.

I have been known to go back to a tire shop 3-4 times before they get it correct.

      Hi Klaus,

What is the 'load test' to whcih you referred?

      Thanks.

A load test is when they balance a tire with a weighted arm to similate load on the tire. All tire stores have these machines. Many times a separated tire can appear to be balanced, but when 'loaded' it shows that the internal cordes are broken.

    Double check the axles.

      Hi Rule,

Not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate?

      Thanks.

Checking for play in the CV joints. Just grab the axle and see if you can move it up/down.

BTW, is this shimy localized to one side or both front wheels?
