96 855 t5 misfire and lamda light after hard acceleration. Rough idle. 850

Long time since i've been here but the old wagon has been good. Well maintained incl new o2 sensors and maf 6 mos ago. New plugs 2 yrs ago. New pcv.system and silicone vac hoses 2 yrs ago. Valves done 3 years ago so I assume head gasket done too.

Was climbing a hill against wind with thule cargo box on top. Cruise was on so max boost as the speed control attempted to keep speed up. Then lambda light came on and car now idles rough, and not great mileage. Of course at start of holiday and far from my code reader. Car not blowing any strange smoke. Oil just changed and not looking cloudy. Antifreeze looking darker than I remember but its been a while since checked. Can't see any oil floating in it

Any thoughts would be very appreciated. Is this my head gasket?

Thanks in advance for the help

Perry

Check your vacuum lines, one may have been blown off during the high pressure run uphill. Do a cursory check around the manifold and also around the turbo.

Also check the intercooler lines. Just get a paper towel to keep your fingers clean, grab a soft line and try to twist it where it connects to a hard line and at the throttle body. Any slippage... tighten it up.

No luck on the vacuum lines. Did make it home and pullrd the plugs. Plug 3 completely fouled with oil. I can only guess it's either a ring or valve issue. How do i tell the difference? Car has 354,000km. Not bad but not feeling quite ready to retire my baby. Time to just let her go?

Now that you are back home, get a compression check after a new spark plug in #3 and verification that #3 does fire.

Preferably with a 'warm' engine, check compression on all 5, then add a table spoon of oil in cyl 3 and check the compression again for #3. It should come up a lot, but that may be an indication that the rings are dry or in bad shape - I have seen both.
If the comnpression does not change for #3, suspect a bad valve or headgasket.

In either case, the fix is costly. Let's hope it is just a bad spark plug or wire.

      Thanks Klaus,

I assume you're the same klaus who provided a wealth of info on the board 10 yrs ago! Glad to see you're still around. Not able to get to the car earlier today so will flollow your suggestions tomorrow morning and hope for the best. Will keep you posted.
