1998 Volvo S70 230k NO A/C at all S70

1998 Volvo S70 230k NO A/C at all

The lights on the A/C and the Recirc do not light when pressed.
I don't sense a change in the air when I press the recirc button either.
The clutch does not engage. Jumperinging the pressure switch
back by the firewall does nothing.

The fuse 25 A #31 labeled "A/C" is fine.

The clutch rotates with the hand. It is not really so easy to turn,
but a child could do it. I have recharged the AC with R134 and the
pressure displayed on guage looked high enough.

- the wires to the compressor look ok.

- last summer I reshimmed the AC per online advice, calling for three small pieces of Visa Card
installed on outside with crazy glue last summer. Card pieces are still in place.

In the main fuse/Relay box - the one with the huge link fuses -
there are three large and one small relay. The small one
is labeled "AC Comp" could this cause all the problems listed above?
If so how would I go about testing the thing with a DVM?

Do you think it is the controller in the dash that is bad? Broken solder?

Many thanks, Mark

    ANSWER 1998 Volvo S70 230k NO A/C at all S70

Something probably wrong with the ECC unit. Does the blower work? That would imply that voltage is getting to the unit. The recirc switch has nothing to do with the AC and should work on it own - which leads me to believe the switches are bad.

Fleabay has them starting at $25, but if there is a pick&pull close to you, that is a better option because of cost - should be cheap and you can swap it in the P&P parking lot.

The other alternative would be to disassemble the unit and repair the switches and LEDs.

I removed the three knobs at the top of the MCC and then removed the two screws under the right and left temp knobs. The control came out about two inches and no further. I then removed the radio and the MCC came out. I unplugged the two connectors at the back several times,
first just to remove it and then to determine which was related to the fan and which to the heat/AC. After at least two disconnect/reconnect cycles, I think it was three, the AC/recirc lights came back on and the A/C kicked in. Go figure. I can only assume it was oxidation on one or more pins in the connector, that got scraped clean by repeated connection/disconnection. My favorite type of repair - Free!

Thanks so much for pointing me to the Climate Control module.

      Hi Klaus!
Thanks again for your help. The blower is working just fine. If the problem is the switches, then I could
pull the unit out, jumper the switch and then the compressor would run, right?

I found a posting for an 850 with similar symptoms, which includes instructions on removing the circuit
board and photos showing a solder connection to check. Any thoughts on that, or the small relay in the
main fuse box labeled "AC comp"?

My son has a 1998 s70 too and is coming this weekend. His heat/ac unit looks different from mine.Does a swap make sense to you?

There are 2 kinds, manual and electronic. They can not be swapped. The ECC has temp dials and a variable blower switch, the MCC has blue and red dots for temp and blower speeds.

The 850 ECC is almost identical to the S70 and are probably interchangable, except for color. Use the documentation you found for the 850 to do the repair. The AC relay I know nothing about, never had it out and apart.

        Hola Mark,

If you have the automatic climate control and need some parts, I might be able to help you!!!

Turn the switch on for the AC and check the cable at the compressor for current.

If I remmember correctly, cars with automatic control also have a relay next to the blower. Do a search about replacing the blower motor for how to!!!

Thanks for your kind offer of parts. I now know I have what is called Manual Climate Control MCC.
It can be identified by three large dials on top (Left Temp - Distribution - Right Temp) and three
items at the bottom left to right (fan knob - recirc button - AC button). Automatic or ECC has a slider for the fan control. I leave this for others trying to identify their Climate Control type.
