Anti freeze leak! 850

1995 850NA. 200,000miles. On the driver's side of the engine, below the distributer, is a metal tube that connects to a hose that leads to the heater core...I always find anti-freeze right below that metal tube. So...it's (1) the hose connection- which I changed (2) the metal tube leading into the engine (3) maybe (oh, I hope not) a head gasket leak from above that tube- just hard to see, or (4)...I haven't a clue!!! When the engine is hot, I smell anti freeze. When you turn on the fan, anti-freeze. There is NO leak in the cabin from the heater core. Cabin interior is dry.
So...ideas? I changed the heater core last summer.

If and when you find out the leak, and fix everything, drain and fill with proper coolant. I use Zerex G05, but OEM Purple Volvo coolant is the best. Don't mess with pre-mixed stuff from big box stores, and especially don't ever use Dex-Cool.. Remember to use distilled water too. Tap water and normal drinking water have minerals that rust out and corrode those olde components.

If it's a head gasket leak, remember to always take it easy on a cold engine. Don't go redlining your engine until it's warmed up to normal operating temperature. Even then, remember it's got high mileage and give it a rest. I'm not implying you're driving all crazy, but I speak from experience. Good luck

Probably not a bad head gasket. The head gaskets rarely leak on the 5 cylinder white block engines since they have an aluminum block and head. So unlike the 4 cylinder red blocks there is no temperature differential between the two metals.

I would have said the hose connection, but you've already replaced that. Has the hose itself been replaced? The only other logical (and cheap!) candidate is the aforementioned o-ring attachment if it wasn't already replaced. It is 17 years old after all...:)

First, you need to find out exactly where it is leaking. Use a degreaser, 409 or Simple Green and wipe down the area where you see the coolant. Use a spray bottle of water to rinse off the cleaner. Let it dry completely, then start the car and let the engine get warm - do some errands?

With the engine still hot, use a white paper towel to pinpoint the leak. My bet is the O ring attachment at the block.
