Sunroof Leaks, wet floor, mildew, tired of it... S70 1998

1998 70-Series (P80 Chassis) with Sunroof.
This is actually a C70, but it's nearly identical to the 20th Century 850 and S/V70s.

For one, the sunroof has never closed quite right, but I usually bump it with the switch to get it to sit flush. That doesn't make any difference because with the slightest precipitation, my roofliner gets soaked and my floorboards get wet. Since I have rubber floor mats, I'm soon treated to mildew and other unpleasant floor-problems.

I figure this is the fault of the sunroof drain tubes, which I assume run through the A and C pillars. I imagine that these are clogged, rain water backs up and drains down inside my interior trim.

The real problem here is that I can't find the dang tubes to clean them out.

I've peered into the corners of the sunroof opening - can't see anything.
I've had the kick panels off at the A pillars and haven't found anything.
I've spent *A LOT* of time under the engine bay and under the rear suspension and have yet to find where these tubes are supposed to come out.

My trunk stays dry, but the interior carpet on the driver's side has gotten so bad the carpet is disintegrating.

I don't have a VADIS anymore, does anyone know of a good source that describes this repair/maintenance?

Thanks as always.

The tubes run along the top of the door - found a pic diagram of how to fix this at http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?act=Reg&CODE=00.

Fixed and Forgotten (Sunroof Leaks, wet floor, mildew, tired of it... ) S70 1998

I managed to get them clean (enough) using bit of silicone tubing to snake down the drain. The big difference was adjusting the Torx screws that held the roof panel in place. Between cleaning and adjusting it, I've had Zero leak issues since.

...'course my carpet looks like shat, but at least it's dry now.

Thanks for weighing in.

Unless you park under a tree with the sunroof open, very little dirt will get into the drain tubes to clog it up. It is easy to see the forward drains, just forward of the rails and on the outer side. I used to pour a 1/2 cup of water in each hole and see if it then drains out just behind the front wheel.

You could use a 14 gauge wire with the end doubled over so it doesn't catch anything and shove it slowly down the drain, if you suspect a clog. This is unusual.

Normally, the sunroof itself gets rusty and the seal is lifted from the metal/glass contact and allows water to come in. This water will not find the drain but leak into the cabin. MIJ had a write up on Matthews a long time ago on how to remove the SR and refurbish the glass seal - not an easy task. I opted to buy a non-rusted SR from a reputable junk yard. 1994-2000 all fit.

Beware that the windshield could also leak at the top. This causes water to enter the car at the dome lights. The cause is a poor seal usually due to an inexpert glass replacement. Solution it to apply a thin amount of sealant under the black rubber, where the windshield meets the metal frame. Be careful and do not get any sealant between the rubber and the roof itself.

The wet spots are well- rearward from the dome lights around the rearview mirror. The liner is wet all around the sun roof opening.

The really weird bit is that water on the passenger side sometimes comes out under the dashboard - dripping out in the middle or even along the side of the console. It's pretty dang strange... but might better fit your theory about a leaky windshield.

Am I right that the drain tubes start at the forward corners of the sunroof? I imagine that the tubes are hidden behind the wheel well liner.

I have never seen the bottom of the forward drain tubes, so I imagine them being between the fender and liner. They go down the A pillar and the drains have a 8-10mm hole, quite easy to spot.

On my old 780, the rear drains were clogged by leaves. I opened the SR half way and stuck a leaf blower on one side to blow all of the leaves out the other. What a mess! I realized I had a problem with the rear drain when I would hit the brakes and the water sloshed forward and gave me a shower!!

Yes, silicone sealant where the windshield meets the upper window frame did wonders for some of us. Just make sure the nozzle opening is as small as possible. The space is only a few mm. You will see it easily when you pull back the rubber from the roof. I only had to do about 1 foot on either side of the centerline.

A while back I heeded Klaus' advise regarding a bad windshield seal....it was the issue and his fix took care of the problem. Water would leak right through the reading light switches !

if you feel wet carpet on either side of the trannie hump, check the drain hose that is underneath the heater core. If it pops out of floor or the nipple breaks [as happened in two of my cars] the A/C and other rainwater will drain into the floor insulation. Because the carpet has a rubber backing, this type of leakage may however go on for years undetected because the carpet will feel dry.....

You have 2 forward drain tubes and 2 drains at the back. I normally clean the 2 forward drains with compress air and the back drains at the drainage point in the trunk. One drain tube is next to the antena motor and the other drain is on the opposite site same location.

You also get some water leakage in the seal that is attach to sun roof glass. I normally lift the lip of the seal and fill in with black silicone.

Thanks, I'll check the rear locations. No issue with a wet trunk, however...
