Delayed acceleration - 2004 S40 (early model 1.9T) S40-V40

I tried searching for this, but nothing came up.

My daughter just told me her S40 is intermittently having severe hesitation when trying to accelerate. She says when she presses the accelerator it is like just taking her foot off the brake. The car will just coast forward at idle speed. If she continues to press the accelerator down to the floor, nothing changes for several seconds. Then it will kick in and accelerate like normal.

We purchased the S40 used in Pennsylvania, and it spent the next 4 years in Indiana. I understand there is some sort of recall for S40’s in those states for some type of salt related internal corrosion that causes a delayed or hesitation in acceleration. I don’t know it this is related or not.

If anyone has heard of this or knows anything about it, please let me know. It is definitely causing an unsafe situation I would like to remedy as soon as possible.

Thanks!

PS. I forgot to mention, the S40 has about 120,000mi on it.

Have you replaced the spark plugs recently? Air filter? The MAF could also be suspect, but an expensive part.

      Delayed acceleration - 2004 S40 (early model 1.9T) S40-V40

Yes, all the basic "tune up" stuff is fine. I thought about possibly the MAF or the throttle position sensor on the throttle body. Before I went digging into them, thought I would toss the symptoms up on the board first. Was hoping someone else ran across a similar problem.

      Thanks anyway,

      Rich

What kind of spark plugs did you use?
Supposedly, S40s are pretty sensitive to plug type and most say stick with a factory plug. Obviously, Volvo doesn't make their own plugs and there is much discussion on who actually makes them.

I've had NGKs in my daughter's '01 and experienced hesitation at 3/4 to full throttle. Haven't gotten around to trying factory plugs yet to see if that would cure the hesitation. Going to wait until the next tune up.

          Delayed acceleration - 2004 S40 (early model 1.9T) S40-V40

I have had NGK's in both the S40 and our S70 ever since they were purchased, and they work great. I have never experienced any hesitation in either vehicle using the NGK's.

Please note, the S40 is not experiencing hesitation. What my daughter describes to me is describing is an extremely long delay before the car will accelerate. From a stop when pulling out into traffic, she says the car will not accelerate for what sounds like several seconds. She says the car will coast at least a half a car length out into the intersection before it will begin accelerating at all. She says it is like taking your foot off the brake when in gear, and not pressing the accelerator, even though she is pressing on the accelerator. She can press the accelerator all the way to the floor and it makes not difference. There is no response. Then all at once, it will begin acting like normal and accelerate normally. It really makes me think the throttle position sensor is going bad.

She lives about 130mi from me, so I have not had a chance to experience this for myself. It is an intermittent problem, though it is happening more frequently than in the past.

          Thanks again for any ideas.
          Rich

Have the VIN ready and give Volvo a call 1-800-458-1552
            and ask about any recalls.

            Here is a short list:

Expand Recall ID # 70357 which is about the fuel pump module.
