I was down to the last key for my 2000 V70 so I decided to have the dealer cut two more new ones. Being in a rush I skipped the key programming the dealer offered. Now I have two keys that open all the doors but won't start the engine.

Is there anyway to self program these keys so that the car recognizes them? I can always go back to the dealer but it would be nice if I could save a little $$ and do it myself.

It is odd that the dealer let you get away without explaining that the keys have to be programmed by an authorized dealer via the computer system. This topic has been discussed before at length, but for 1999 and newer, there is no other choice.

I believe that the dealer has you by the.....wallet. The key fob transmits to an antenna at the key tumbler, so they have to program it....

I was wrong! I was just at my local True Value hardware store and they have a sign up in the keyshop that says that they have a service that does the chip reprog. I will see about more intel and report back. HAS TO BE A CHEAPER OPTION THAN YOUR DEALER.

Good day, I saw the same sign also. I purchased a new key and fob from Ebay. Haven't had the chance to take both to True Value yet.

For tru value to program a key they would need 5k worth of hardware and a software subscription from volvo to help you. They can do domestics and some imports but not volvo. You will have to get it done at the dealer

Yup, the sign at my hardware store was merely a referral to a transponder key service that they are affiliated with........
