Towing with the FWD V-70 V70-XC70

I'm thinking of towing a toyota pick-up truck with my year 2000 Volvo FWD V-70 with 120,000 miles on it and running well. Has anyone out there towed with a vehicle like this? Will it melt the transmission or should a change out the fluid in it? It could be a long tow maybe 2400 miles. I could put the truck on a trailer but that would increase the weight to be towed. Any experience with this from anyone? Thanks and may your electronic throttle modules never fail

Towing with the FWD V-70 V70-XC70

Will you be using a tow dolly or a bumper mounted bar(to the toyota)? While the weight is close to the limit for unbraked towing and you might experiance some tail wagging in windy conditions and when semis pass you.

If the truck wheels are on the ground, is the drive axle removed so there is less strain on the V70 tranny?

Why not get a oneway ticket at Southwest and drive the toyota?

      Thank you again Klause V70-XC70

Thank you Klause for this reply and others. You've given me the facts to think about stuff for the past three or four years now

I always disconnect the drive shaft so that the transmission doesn't spin without its oil pump on because I had planned to tow the front wheels up only with a dolly. This is a four wheel drive so it has more weight. The year 89 truck was sitting in a barn with 7000 miles on it when I inherited it a few years ago. I think I'll just caravan the truck. I hate to burn the gas but tail wagging scares me. I read an LA Times exposé on U-Haul and the disasters that it is part of when people unknowingly tow things equal to the weight of the car doing the pulling

Reminds me of the time I picked up a 164 with a Jeep Wrangler. The 164 on the dolly tried to pass me at only 35 mph! Fortunately, I could take local city streets for the 20 mile trip home.

A car dolly is fine behind a Suburban or full size pickup truck that can easily tow 7500lbs unbraked, but the V70 has a limit of 3500lbs and to be safe, I suggest a weight under 3K, including trailer weight. I sure wouldn't go 2400 miles! That's a 3 day trip at 60mph. For that many miles, do NOT use a car dolly, full trailer with tandem axles and electric brakes only, regardless of the towing vehicle.

How often do you see the turkys hauling a potential disaster behind their motor homes? A $200,000 RV and the owner scrimps with a dolly????? Brainless...
