Broke down hours after filling empty tank/Fuel Filter? S70 1998

Last night i was driving home from work 3 mi. from my home. My 98 s70 just stalled out while decelerating around a corner. Earlier that day about 8 hrs prior I had filled up my almost completely empty gas tank. We pushed it to a local independent shop nearby and I might have them look at it soon. Car started fine, drove 2 miles without hesitation and then stalled and wouldn't re-start after. Went back at about 6am today to retry it and it still won't start. Does this sound like fuel filter, since I had let tank get almost totally empty pre-filling it, could I have mixed up some dirt or gunk into the gas line?

One thing that I have seen discussed is that the fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump.

Running too low may have shortened its life.

That is a great theory, but most of the pumps I have seen are at the top of the tank. The fuel going through the pump will cool it. When the fuel level gets low enough and starts sloshing around, air will be picked up and then the injectors will partially starve for fuel and misfires start happening.

It appears that the fuel pumps are good for at least 150K miles, after that it may stop working at any time. Of course, quite a few cars have 250K+ miles with the original pump.

So...it turns out its the fuel pump. I was given an estimate of 350 (parts/labor) and then I was called back, and the mechanic said that since its an AWD its going to be more in the realm of 1000 or more due to the labor intensive work to put the new pump in.

AWD saddle tank S70 1998

I agree with your feeling of despair, the design of the saddle tank and the placement of the 2 fuel pumps is really poor. There was one person who cut out the floor under the rear passenger seat to get to the pump, rather than drop the driveshaft and exhaust to lower the tank.

Why Volvo couldn't have designed better access, ala the 850, is beyond my intelligence level.

Let me see, the gasoline pick up is at the lowest part of the tank so if there was 'dirt' in the tank, it would have sucked it up a long time ago.

I would first turn the key to position II and listen for the pump priming the pressure. If you don't hear anything, The relay is the cheapest thing. So pull the relay #103, from under the fuse tray - using a paper clip, jump ports 15&87, turn the key to position II again and listen for the pump. If the pump now works, get or repair the relay. If the pump still doesn't run, replace the pump.

The fuel filter is easy to replace and about $20, but they seldom get clogged these days. Remember, newer cars do not have a fuel filter, that is how much better fuel delivery is.
