Replacing rear brake pads -- questions S40-V40 2000

Hi,

My MY2000 S40 has about 20k miles now and the rear brake pads are getting low (the front ones are still good). I want to replace the pads myself with the help of a knowlegable friend. I appreciate any tips as to any special procedure I need to do, any precautions, and whether I need a special tool. Thank you very much for your help.

Johan

Re: Replacing rear brake pads -- questions S40-V40 2000

I took off the rear brake caliper this weekend. As pointed out by John O, a special tool is required to collapse the piston. The tool should be simple actually -- it has to turn and press the piston at the same time. However, you need quite a bit of force pressing in the piston. Because of the lack of a proper tool, I decided not to proceed further -- I just took it to the local Volvo specialist.

Anyway, after 20k mostly highway miles (in San Francisco Bay Area though) and with no hard braking, there was about 20-25% left on the rear brake pads. The front pads are still about 50%. When new the front and rear brake pads are the same thickness.

This is my first visit to this site. I own a 2000 S40. I was surprised when my rear brakes went before my fronts. My prior experience had been the other way around. FYI - At around 30M miles my front brakes needed to be done.

It could be the type of pad they use on the rear of S/V40. I know that the rear pads cost less than the fronts. But I don't understand how the rear ones wear out faster without creating more brake dust than the fronts? If any one changes there rear pads, see if they are thinner than the fronts starting out.

The back wear more because the are used during light braking, when you brake harder the front ones and the rear are used.

You'll need a special tool to turn the pistons in. They don't just push in like most cars do in the rear.

Unscrew the MC Res cap first. Things go a lot easier.
