blows warm air...the saga continues... S70 1998

following the most excellent advice of Klaus C., did the "grab both evaporator pipes while A/C is running" check...one meh cold, one reaaaaaaaaaally cold...so I need more refrigerant? a whole can, or is it possible to add a partial amount?? while I am at it, what exactly is leaking? seals connected piping to evaporator, or the evaporator itself? I'm gonna guess both are a bear of a repair.....

Just how cold should the piping from the evaporator be when it enters the engine bay? Cold to the touch. Not quite like the very cold and sweaty input line, but cold. Sounds like you have enough, so long as the blower is on high.

The S/V70 850 AC is never going to be ice cold like an American car, it is designed differently.

You might want to get some foam insulation for the sweaty/cold input pipe and install it when the pipe is not sweating and the engine off. No need to cool off the engine compartment.

You also might try back flushing the radiator to get some of the dirt out of the fins in the radiator as well as the intercooler and the condenser. Especially the bottom third. If you take the fan shroud out, access will be much easier.

The Volvo manual has 10 hours of labor to repl the evaporator.

Klaus, again...you rule! guess I will be satisfied with A/C as is...but a query? does it really take 10 hrs to do evaporator?

There was a mechanic at Borton Volvo who could do it in 4!!! But that is all he did. And he did a lot of 850s.

The billing book still says 10, the average for a mechanic is around 8, and at least 16 for the typical DIY.

A couple of years ago, I went to the Borton and was quoted $2100 for the job.
