Replace hydraulic ABS pump help 850

I posted what I thought was as simple brake issue port (see link below) on my 94 850 NA.

http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1534717/850/850_rear_calipers_licked.html

But now the issue appears to be the ABS hydraulic modulator pump (non traction control unit.) See the picture below the unit is item#1. My dealer tech told me the pump is bad and would need to be replaced. I am not sure this is something a shade tree guy like me should be tackling (it is my son's daily driver) but at the same time I went to the pick and pull and was able to remove the part I needed relatively easy. It's always easier getting the part off since everything that is attached to it doesn't matter, just that part.

So does anyone have any experience getting the ABS hydraulic modulator pump installed? Also, does any company out there rebuild these units? I believe Volvo used Teves IV units but cannot find anyone who rebuilds these. My dealer tech said they would use a used part since the new unit is $1100+. I hate to put and old part in this car and have it fail 12 months from now. The plan is to keep this for at least 3 more years while my kids get out of college and here is no reason to believe this car won't make it.

I pulled the service manual info and once the pump i replaced it seems like a simple flush/bleed of the brake system. Anyone with hands on experience please post you experience. Thanks in advance.

Here is actual picture of the actual ABS pump. The part is removed from the "frame" it sits in under the master cylinder. My car has a non-TRACS unit so it doesn't have as many brake line fittings.

That is not a 'normal' failure item, in fact I have never seen one fail before. So getting a used one from a non-TRKS car would be OK.

I suspect that normal bleeding of the brake lines should be all that is required. I suggest using a pump for bleeding, at about 10-15psi.

I remember the dealer quoating me $2,000 for a new ABS pump for my 854T about 7 years ago.

My independent guy was not interested in this job for some reason. So I took it to my dealer (who is very good but expensive). The allowed me to bring my own part ($40 from an e bay seller as the local pick & pull gets $80 for an abs pump???) They did the work yesterday along with a bad control arm (plus alignment) for inspection. Now $600 later the car lives to fight another day (or hopefully a year longer). FYI the dealer charge for labor on this ABS pump repair alone was $225.

The dealer tech said he only ever saw one of these pumps bad back when the 850's were new and the pump was leaking. Other than that he never replaced one before. So it is a rare repair even 18 years after the car was built. The good news is used parts seem to be a good way to save on the cost. FYI, the 850's have two types of ABS pumps. These with TRACS and those W/O. I also believe later 1995 the pumps change to a square shaped unit whereas the older pumps look more like a black cylinder. You have to match the units correctly. I'm no expert in this repair so double check your part number for compatibility at the dealer.

I hope this helps someone if they get no fluid when trying to bleed their 850 brakes.

Thanks for the update. Most dealers do not have a replacement ABS pump and allowing you to supply a used part was nice of him. Yea, it is a 2 hour job which includes bleading the brakes, so $225 sounds about right.

Beats the price of a used 850.

Way better than buying a "new" used 850! This one is the car that will go for 300k+. I told the kids to get used to how the 850's look they are going to be here for a while:)
