S80 won't shift out of Park S80 2005

This has got me stumped. 2005 S80; 76,000 miles. 5 speed auto, not Geartronic

My wife took it to work, 15 miles highway. Then drove 1/2 mile to a meeting at lunch. No problem. Comes back to car, it starts just fine, but won't shift out of Park.

I'm just back from giving the car a work over and no luck. Here's what I know:
Opened up the trim around the shifter to expose the mechanicals.

When the key is switched on, I can see the shift-lock drop out of the way as it should.

When I depress the brake pedal I can feel the magnet or whatever in the shift trigger activate.

Squeeze the shift trigger and the lever just won't move. I can't see any other barriers.

Unplugged the tranny selector wiring harness, let it sit for a minute or two, then plugged it back in. No change.

Disconnected the battery and let it sit a while, reconnected, no change.
All associated fuses intact.

No CEL.

We've had several months of intermittent difficulty shifting it INTO Park after driving, and I've sprayed silicone in the shifter a few times with some success. That problem seems to be in the shift trigger. Maybe it's related to this.

Ideas?

TIA

    S80 won't shift out of Park: SOLVED S80 2005

Got back to the car last night. Whacked the shifter and sprayed silicone with no benefit.

Disconnected the shift cable at the base of the shifter to rule out frozen transmission switch.

Pulled shifter knob off the stalk.

I helps to understand how the mechanism works to solve the problem. After removing the knob it was apparent that no amount of whacking or spraying would cure this. The trigger in the knob engages a plastic rod which slides up and down within the stalk. The bottom of the rod is metal. In Park, the rod serves as a barrier to moving the shift lever because the metal bottom engages a slot in the shifter assembly. When the trigger is squeezed, it pulls up on the top of the plastic rod, pulling the metal end out of the slot, allowing you to pull the lever back and engage a gear. In my case the trigger was broken inside and not able to pull up on the rod. Once I removed the rod, the shifter lever would move freely. I reconnected the cable, started the car, and drove it home without incident.

    S80 won't shift out of Park S80 2005

You had this problem in April. WD40 freed up the button enough to allow you to shift. Obviously, the fish oil dried up by now and the problem is back. Consider some silicone spray.

With all due respect, to set the record straight, my problem in the spring was that it wouldn't go into Park. And I used silicone for that problem, not WD40. That particular problem proved itself to be caused by the trigger not able to be depressed completely. In the current problem, the trigger is completely depressed.

Your point of respraying is well taken, and I will go there and spray, whack, curse, and whatever else comes to mind.

One of us had the same problem. Solved the issue by pounding the shift lever straight down with his fist.

I relayed that to her and over lunch she and a male coworker took a 2" hardbound book and played whack a mole with the shifter. No change.
