anti freeze V50

What kind of anti freeze does Volvo use? Is it conventional poly glycol or is it some proprietary blend?

It is a blend. Only use OEM or Zerex G05 along with a gallon of distilled water. The OEM is quite expensive, but it will last for a couple of years and mix nicely with what is left in the heater core (pint).

Will the zerex hurt my car? (I have a 2004 xc90 and the light came on saying the coolant is low and that I should not drive the car. The manual says to add a 50/50 mixture of specifically "VOLVO" coolant, but the dealership is far away; I will find a way to get there, though, if it means a choice between using something less expensive and more convenient vs. risking damage to the car!)

Thanks

Mixing different coolants is not advised. For your XC90, I suggest filling with distilled water until you get Antifreeze for it. A slight imbalance of water over antifreeze will not hurt it this time of year.
