1989 t5 Is it worth buying? S70 1998

Looking for a car for my son and saw this t5 for sale in craigslist for $4.5k Talk to the owner and saying it is well taken cared car. But I found out transmission fluid was not changed at all since after 130k+ miles, it has 153k at this momemt. Any thoughts about the condition of that transmission? is it still ok or too worn out already considering the miles it ran w/o a fresh fluid?
It's crazy, looking at volvos maintenace record book, it never mention of changing the fluid at all, it just says check/refill and maybe that is what this novice are relying on. I use to have 4 volvos and pampered them good.
Thanks! for any reply.

That's a bit on the high side for a '98 T5. I'd say not a penney more than $3k. I might payn that for a pristene S/V90, but not an S70 T5 or not.

The 97-00 S70's have transmission issues when the fluid is not changed frequently. The transmission can throw a code that shuts down the engine completely. IIRC this is before Volvo came up with the brilliant idea to change the electronic fluid valve settings so they can compensate for the variation in fluid viscosity as the fluid ages - INSTEAD of changing the fluid!!!(brings the change interval from 70k to 110k miles)
I have stopped by stranded S/V 70's to help out and in two cases they never changed the fluid. In fact there is a Volvo recall that addresses the issue and has a re-program of the fluid valve settings. Bottom line is if you change the fluid (at 50k miles) it won't fail. But then you'll have to get Volvo to re-program the transmission for a fluid change that is different than what Volvo says it should be to compensate for the higher viscosity fluid before it was 'needed'.

You don't happen to remember what year Volvo changed the electronic fluid valve settings? I have a 95 850, but if I ever buy a 98-2000 S/V70 I'd like to know...:)

I know it's maybe an over kill flushing every 40k miles but that is what I've been doing to my cars for peace of mind and all running with synthetic fluid and oil ever since new. 99 T5(155k miles),99 V70AWD (150K miles), 94 940T 115 miles(gone by accident - son) 87 240DL 190K miles (gone by accident - daughter) You see, those volvos served me well esp. those last two, I don't know what was the outcome if they were not driving a volvo.

I just did the drain and fill on my daughter's '98. No reprogram just dump the old fluid and fill with new. Do it again at next oil change and you have mostly fresh fluid going thru the system.

Drain and fill for AT S70 1998

Those that prefer to just drain the sump on the AT cars, here is a suggestion or two.

Do it with a cold tranny. After the car has sat and cooled off, the ATF collects in the sump with the heaviest, dirtiest fluid on the bottom.

Before draining, pull the dipstick and mark the level on the stick. It will be way above the full mark, which is normal. Then you know how much fluid you will need to put back in without measuring what was drained - typically about 3.5 quarts.

Use a new crush washer each time. Same crush washer as the oil drain plug.

First time I ever heard this for a 4 speed AT. Just flush the fluid.

That is a lot of money for a 98/99 T5, regardless of the mileage. If the tranny was flushed once at about 90K, you are good to go.

I suspect the car will need struts/shocks, new fluids everywhere, and tie rod ends soon. Plus, the Tbelt interval is every 70K miles.

The turbo will last much longer, but the PTC nipple will need cleaning and it is time to re-do the vacuum lines.

Thanks! guys. After reading to what been said, I think it's just wise to back out, even how I am attached to volvos. Maybe it was ok if it will be mine coz i can do most of those occuring repairs but it will be driven by my son for college 250 miles away and does not know about cars at all. Sure I will take care and made sure it will be in good shape before handing it to him but it might be too big of a gamble esp. he is too far from home.

A college bound son that is not mechanically inclined needs a Toyota with a 4 cyl engine.

Claus, I think it is mutual for him to have a used rice mobile instead. Even though they are more expensive to buy at least i will have more peace of mine.
Again, thanks! for the wiser conclusion.

But the safety issue of the Volvo is why I put up with the repairs on the college kids cars. By the way, $4500 is too high for even a nice car. Nice R models come up at that price with decent service histories.

The trick is to get them to stay closer to home. Actually I do that and when they come home and raid the food it's cheaper to send them and the Volvo to the Volvo dealer:)

College car for non mechanical son S70 1998

I was thinking more along the lines like this:

              http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/cto/3122161937.html

Lots of room, should always start even after weeks of parking, snow capable, good visibility, it's not a station wagon, and spare parts are available in most junk yards.

I bought my daughter an Outback. She needed to be able to carry 4'X4' boards for her art work. No Volvo can do that anymore. And she was/will be 800 miles away without a hovering mechanic.

Having owned a 1997 850 GLT since 1999, that 1989 T5 is similar and would be fun to own and drive. HOWEVER, be prepared for repair costs, probably average about $1000 per year.
FWIW, my transmission is fine after about 200,000 miles with only two fluid changes. But I have gone thru 3 heater cores, 2 faulty ABS modules.

I'd be more worried about the turbo... Have you ever priced one up? They're not cheap. At that mileage you could be looking at a car that's $3500 overpriced.
