Alarm LED & Solar Sensor Housing 850 1994

Has anyone out there had the pleasure of replacing the alarm LED & solar sensor housing on the front dashboard just below the windshield?

Unfortunatly, the plastic clips holding mine in were broken by an over-enthusiastic fellow cleaning the top dash at a local car wash a few years ago, and it's been flopping around up there ever since. I've finally gotten around to locating a replacement, but I've discovered that the wires going to the sensor housing are too short to allow me to remove it very far from the dashboard surface.

To further complicate things, I can't figure out for certain how to unclip the wires going into it.

(1) Does anyone know if the wire connector is just fitted in, or is it clipped somehow?

(2) Is there anyway to "release" the wires so that I have some more play in them for removing / installing the housing?

(3) Is there any good under-the-dash access to these wires, or is it so far back up there it would require removing the dashboard surface if I manage to lose the connection and it drops down into the opening?!

Thanks in advance!

I used a silicone based rubber sealant, stays pliable so if you have to replace later, unit will release from dash. Also works on red door lights that have broken free.

This may not be what you want to here but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. What you have is a common problem. Has happened on 2 850s I have owned. The best solution in my opinion is to glue it back down. Glue actually does not work but two part epoxy does. In about 10 minutes you can have it fixed and quiet again. You can not believe how much noise that thing makes. Once again just my 2 cents

Re: Alarm LED & Solar Sensor Housing 850 1996

Hello,

The same thing happened to me several years ago on my '96. I had thought about glueing it as Charles suggested, but wondered what problems I might have later if I needed to replace the unit. I ended up using a little bit of rubber sealant, and this "fix" has held up well throught the extremes of the Canadian climate. No noises, and if I do need to replace the unit I can still pull it out of the dash easily.
