People with 3" exhausts 850

I've been noticing a lot of people mentioning problems with various emissions (lambda) warnings regarding 3" exhausts.

I intend on running a PES/GIAC chip with a 3" downpipe, 3" cat and 3" cat-back and an open element air filter.

Should I be expecting the constant lighting of the lambda warning light?

If this set-up does cause fault codes setting off the lambda warning light, will that affect performance (something like a "limp home" safety, like the Caddilac Northstar engines)?

Can I reset the lambda warning using the chech-engine reset method available in the older 850's?

Thanx for the helpy guys.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850

Exhaust flow is measured volumetrically not by mass. So any increase in diameter will cause the car to burn o2 lean fuel rich. 2.5 apparently keeps it with in the limits. 3" may be just enough to set off a light. If you go 3" have your chip programed for it and you will have no problems. Most chop programs know to take into account the volumetric flow rate differences.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850

So if I tell PES that I want to run a 3" exhaust, they should be able to get a GIAC chip set-up for the 3" exhaust?

They should be able to. If not your dealer can do it.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850

I spoke to some people at PES and they basically told me that Supersprint did their homework and that I shouldn't put in a 3" and that a 3" may set off the warning lights. When I asked if they could set the chip up for a 3" exhaust, they asked why I wanted to run a 3" and that I shouldn't.

Super sprint is 2.5 not 3". As for no need for a 3" I agree but exhaust semantics are something we shall save for another day. You do lose lower end with a 3" exhaust though.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850

I know Supersprint is a 2.5". That's why I was a little skeptical that they said that the 2.5" would pretty much be optimal. I just wanted to do some research to decide whether a 2.5" would be the right exhaust for me, or whether they were just trying to make a sale.

I've done some calculations, and you are very right, I will lose low end power, but I will reduce turbo lag. So I guess the two cancel out.

One of my concerns is also NOT sounding like a rice cooker. I've heard 3" systems on 850's and though it does not sound like a rice cooker, it is frickin' LOUD!!! Just starting the engine is an event. When the engine kicks in, it's a booming, ground shaking VROOOM!!! It actually sounds pretty good, but man is it loud. Also, since I do a lot of highway driving, I don't want to deal with exhaust droning. I wouldn't mind it, but I'm not the only driver, and I like enjoying my custom sound system.

It's not set in stone, but, definetly, the PES/GIAC chip and most probably the Supersprint 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" cat, 2.5" cat-back with a single silencer, and as of yet, an unknown open element air filter.

Man, it'll be atleast 2 weeks before it gets warm enough to put the summer tires on, and warm enough to get to work on my baby. I just can't wait.

The Supersprint 2.5" system has no cat. If you're in the US you need one.

I saw a company selling 3" downpipe 2.5" cat back in the US I think it is Coyote something check the links on the BB. My guess is that they are selling Ferrita brand exhaust components as a US distrubutor for SAM from Sweden, but that is just my guess.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850 95

If the Supersprint doesn't come with a cat, then what the heck is that black bulge?

http://www.supersprint.com/English/marmitte.asp?MO=vol85010&MA=33

I called PES-Tuning and inquired about emissions, and they said that a PES/GIAC chip and the Superspringt downpipe with high flow cat and cat-back with a single muffler, should pass emissions. Would they lie to me?

I saw the Coyote Motorsports, but they are really expensive and I like to be able to see the product (even a picture) before I buy it.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850 95

The black buldge is a resignator (sp?) not a cat. If you want to see a pic of the Ferrita exhaust try looking at the SAM, SCT or Ferrita web sights. I tool a pic of my Ferrita downpipe that I can scan in if you want to see it.

I know that the ATR 2.5" exhaust system has a cat so that may be a more reasonable option for you.

Re: People with 3" exhausts 850 95

I already tried SAM, SCT and Ferrita for pics. SAM doesn't have pics, SCT either doesn't seem to exist anymore or is having difficulties with their site and Ferrita doesn't have pics.

I'd love to see a pic of the Ferrita pipe.

I actually wouldn't mind going with the ATR. It's just that the tip on the thing is so damn ulgy! It's not polished, looks like it's about to rust (even though it won't being stainless steel, atleast I hope it doesn't) and has that (in my opinion) nasty LARGE circular tip that cannot be changed.

I like the polished stainless/chrome? OVAL tip of the Supersprint myself. But that's just my opinion.
