Failed safety - loose tie rod V70-XC70

Hi all,

I failed my safety inspection today ('98 V70R) because of a 'loose tie rod' passenger side, is what they said, too much play. Could someone clue me in to what that probably refers to, i.e., is it the inner tie rod or probably the ball joint? Is there a way for me to tell?

I've never touched these in the V70R, but in my old Saab, I replaced all my ball joints because the rubber was splitting.

Thanks in advance. I just don't really trust that they know anything, it was a Emissions express sort of place, not a true mechanic.

Thanks,

Wes

    2 thoughts here:

    1. Lift up front of car and see if you get any play by pushing/pulling on the arm from the steering rack. If the inner is loose, you may feel it or hear it move. Seems unlikely the outer would be loose unless of course the boot is gone. If it's loose, you may need to replace to pass the check or alternatively,

    2. If you don't see/feel any passenger side looseness, maybe try another place?

    Mike
